Collegiate Baseball Div 1 Poll (3-25-19)

N.C. STATE NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — N.C. State (23-1) is ranked No. 1 in the latest Collegiate Baseball NCAA Div. I baseball poll presented by Big League Chew.  

Ranked No. 1 for the second straight week, the Wolfpack leads the nation in wins and is first in the Atlantic Coast Conference with an 8-1 record.

Over the past weekend, N.C. State swept a 3-game series at Miami (Fla.). It was the first time the Wolfpack has ever swept the Hurricanes. In the final game of the series, N.C. State trailed by two and was down to its final two outs as the Wolfpack rallied for four runs in the top of the ninth to win, 6-4. N.C. State has now recorded 12 come-from-behind wins, including seven when trailing after the sixth inning.

Poll Notes: Several teams are red-hot. U.C. Irvine, Oklahoma and Southern Mississippi have each won seven in a row. Stanford, Texas A&M and East Carolina have won six straight.

In key matchups over the weekend, Mississippi St. took two of three at home against Auburn, UCLA swept a 3-game series against Arizona at home, Vanderbilt swept a 3-game series at home against Florida, Georgia took two of three at home against Louisiana St., Louisville lost two of three at home against Georgia Tech., Texas Christian won two of three at home against Texas, Texas Tech. swept a 3-game series at home against Michigan, Texas A&M swept a 3-game series at Kentucky and Washington swept a 3-game series at home against Southern California.

Four  teams fell out of the top 30 in Texas (2-3 last week), Mississippi (3-2), Miami, Fla. (lost 6 straight) and Michigan 2-3).

The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1959 college baseball season.

RHP Noah Song, Navy: Song struck out 13 batters during a 5-2, 7 inning complete game against Army. He only allowed two hits. At one point, he retired 14 of 15 batters. He now has struck out at least 10 batters in all six of his starts this season. On the season, he leads the country with 78 strikeouts in 39 2/3 innings of work.

1B Tristan Peterson, New Mexico St.: Peterson belted 5 home runs with 13 RBI as he was 12-for-19 at the plate with 7 runs scored. All 5 home runs and 10 of his RBI came during a 3-game series against Cal. St. Bakersfield.

CF Aaron Simpson, Ball St.: Simpson collected 17 hits in 26 at-bats over 5 games and scored 12 runs as he hit 2 doubles, 1 triple, collected 6 RBI and compiled 21 total bases. For good measure, he was 3-for-3 in stolen bases.

LHP Asa Lacy, Texas A&M: Lacy had a career-high 13 strikeouts in 6 innings during a 9-3 win over Kentucky. He recorded 8 strikeouts over the final 3 innings and fanned the last 6 batters he faced.

OF/1B Ubaldo Lopez, Dartmouth: Lopez entered last week with only 5 hits in 50 career at-bats. But something clicked for the sophomore as he went 9-for-22 with 5 doubles, 2 homers and 11 RBI. He hit safely in each of the Big Green’s 6 games and had at least one extra-base hit in 5 of them.

RHP Beau Keathley, Oakland: Keathley threw a 9-inning complete game as he fanned a career-high 13 batters and only allowed 3 hits as he led Oakland to an 8-0 win over Youngstown St. At one point, he retired 14 consecutive batters.

SS Jimmy Titus, Bryant: Titus went 11-for-20 with 3 home runs, 3 doubles, 14 RBI and 9 runs scored over 4 games last week. He had the best offensive game in program history against Hartford as he went 5-for-5 with 2 home runs, 7 RBI and 5 runs scored as he tied single-game program records for hits, RBI and runs scored.

RHP Seth Shuman, Georgia Southern: Shuman dominated Arkansas-Little Rock as he struck out a career-high 13 batters in 7 innings. It was the most by an Eagle pitcher since 2014.

LHP Ian Seymour, Virginia Tech.: Seymour was two outs away from Virginia Tech’s first no-hitter in more than 30 years as he shut down North Carolina for more than eight innings during a 4-1 win. Ultimately, he allowed 1 run on 3 hits with 6 strikeouts in the 9 inning complete game performance.
