Collegiate Baseball Div 1 Poll (3-6-23)

LSU NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Louisiana St. (10-1) is ranked No. 1 for the fourth straight time in Collegiate Baseball’s NCAA Division I baseball poll presented by Big League Chew bubble gum.

The Tigers won four games last week with a victory at Texas and a win at home against Butler and two wins at home against Central Connecticut St.

LSU is averaging 11.1 runs per game in 11 games and has a 3.10 team ERA with 121 strikeouts and 32 walks. Even more impressive is that the Tigers have only committed 3 errors in 11 contests.  

No. 2 Wake Forest is off to a perfect 13-0 record for just the second time in program history, joining the 1949 ball club. The Deacs have outscored opponents, 158-27 with a team ERA of 1.80 as the pitching staff has fanned 178 batters and only walked 27 in 13 games.

In key series over the weekend, Florida beat Miami (FL) two of three, Georgia beat Georgia Tech. two of three, Florida Gulf Coast beat Florida St. two of three in Tallahassee and South Carolina beat Clemson two of three.

Poll Notes: Several teams are on impressive winning streaks, including Wake Forest (13), N.C. State (12), Alabama (12), Tennessee (11) and Virginia (11).

Two teams fell out of the top 30 in the University of San Diego (lost five straight games last week) and Florida St. (lost two of three at home to Florida Gulf Coast). Two new teams in the top 30 are U.C. Irvine (10-1, won 5 straight) and Florida Gulf Coast (10-2). The Anteaters swept three games at Arizona St. over the past weekend.

RHP Paul Skenes, Louisiana St.: Skenes dominated Butler with 13 strikeouts over 6 innings and only allowed 1 hit and no runs with no walks. He allowed a 2-out single in the first inning and then retired 16 straight Butler hitters to complete his outing. It was the most amount of strikeouts by an LSU pitcher since 2018.

3B Colby Shelton, Alabama: Shelton hit 5 home runs over 4 games with 1 double and 12 RBI as he went 7-for-15 with 7 runs scored.

1B Hunter Fitz-Gerald, Old Dominion: Fitz-Gerald belted 5 home runs with 1 double, 13 RBI and 11 runs scored as he went 10-for-18 at the plate.

RHP Sam Hliboki, Vanderbilt: Hliboki combined with three other Vanderbilt pitchers to fire a 4-0 no-hitter against Minnesota. He struck out 8 batters over 3 2/3 innings with 1 walk.

LF Shane Lewis, Troy: Lewis belted 4 home runs with 14 RBI over 4 games as he went 8-for-13 at the plate.

RHP Kyle Iwinski, Purdue: Iwinski retired 21 of the 22 batters he faced in his first career start as a Boilermaker, shutting out Akron on 78 pitches in seven innings. He struck out 8.

LF Daniel Pacella, Illinois St.: Pacella hit 4 home runs and went 6-for-20 at the plate as he collected 8 RBI and scored 5 runs.

RHP Colin Purcell, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi: Purcell fired a complete game 1-hitter during an 8-0 win over Lindenwood. He struck out 8 batters and only walked 1 as he only threw 88 pitches in the 9-inning contest.

C Cannon Peebles, N.C. State: Peebles was on fire against New Jersey Institute of Technology as he went 8-for-10 with 2 homers, 3 doubles, 17 total bases, 11 RBI and posted a slugging percentage of 1.700. In a 21-2 win over NJIT, Peebles went 6-for-6 with 3 doubles, 2 homers, 2 runs scored and 10 RBI.

LHP Josh Hartle, Wake Forest: Hartle struck out a career-high 12 batters during a 10-3 win over Cornell in 7 innings of work.

2B Jackson Van de Brake, North Carolina: Van de Brake belted 4 home runs with 10 RBI as he went 7-for-17 at the plate. He also walked 5 times. Two of his home runs were in a game against Virginia Commonwealth and two more were hit in a game against Stony Brook.

RHP/1B Jackson Finley, Georgia Tech.: Finley belted 4 home runs with 9 RBI as he went 5-for-14 at the plate with 3 walks. On the mound against Georgia, he went 4 innings and allowed only 2 hits with 4 strikeouts as his ERA on the season sat at 1.38.

1B/OF/C Kiko Romero, Arizona: Romero collected 10 RBI over 4 games as he hit 4 doubles, 2 homers, 1 triple and went 7-for-16 at the plate with 5 runs scored.
