Collegiate Baseball Div 1 Poll (3-7-22)

TEXAS NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Texas (11-1) is ranked No. 1 for the fourth straight Collegiate Baseball NCAA Division I baseball poll presented by Big League Chew bubble gum.

The Longhorns won 11 straight to kick off the 2022 season and lost in its final game of the Shriners Hospitals For College Baseball Classic, 5-1 to UCLA. In the prior two games of the tournament, Texas beat Tennessee, 7-2 and Louisiana St., 6-1.

Texas, which has outscored opponents 86-18, has a microscopic team ERA of 1.00 which ranks No. 1 in NCAA Div. I and has struck out 111 with only 34 walks over 12 games. Fourteen pitchers who have seen action this season have given up one or no runs.

Defensively, the Longhorns have only committed six errors in 12 games and have limited opponents to just six stolen bases.

Poll Notes: In key series over the weekend, Georgia Tech. took two of three from Georgia, Gonzaga beat Oklahoma St. twice, Texas St. beat Arizona two of three, Florida beat Miami, Fla. two of three and Tulane beat Mississippi St. two of three.

Several teams have been hot. Purdue (12-0) and Virginia (11-0) are undefeated while Liberty has won 10 straight, Vanderbilt 9 in a row, Texas Tech. 9 straight, Connecticut 7 in a row and Gonzaga, Notre Dame and Old Dominion 6 consecutive.

Five teams fell out of the top 30 in N.C. State (4 straight losses), Mississippi St. (2-3 last week), Louisiana Tech. (2-3), Kentucky (3-2) and Coastal Carolina (1-4).

The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1959 college baseball season.

RHP Sean Bergeron, Western Kentucky: Bergeron struck out a career-high 16 batters during a 9-inning complete game against Hartford. Over 9 innings, he surrendered three hits and didn’t allow a walk.

LF Brandon Pimentel, Texas Rio Grande Valley: Pimentel belted 4 home runs with 2 doubles, 9 RBI and scored 5 runs over 5 games as he went 10-for-19 at the plate. At one point, he had home runs in 3 of 6 at-bats during a stretch of reaching base in 8 consecutive plate appearances.  

RHP Landon Sims, Mississippi St.: Sims struck out 10 of the 11 batters he faced and did not allow a baserunner in 3 2/3 innings against Tulane.

DH JP Sponseller, Cincinnati: Sponseller hit 4 home runs with 8 RBI and 7 runs scored over 5 games as he went 7-for-18.

LHP Brycen Mautz, San Diego: Mautz struck out 15 batters over 6 1/3 innings which was one strikeout shy of the school record against Dallas Baptist. He fanned every Dallas Baptist starter at least once.

RHP Thatcher Hurd, UCLA: Hurd struck out 15 batters over 6 2/3 shutout innings in two appearances (1 start, 1 in relief) as he only allowed 2 hits. In a start against Long Beach St, he registered 5 scoreless innings and allowed 2 hits while striking out 12, the most by a UCLA freshman since Gerrit Cole in 2009. Then he threw 1 2/3 innings of relief against Oklahoma without giving up a hit while striking out 3.

1B Trenton Quartermaine, Ball St.: Quartermaine produced four straight games with a home run last week. He hit 4 homers with 4 runs scored and 5 RBI as he went 7-for-19 at the plate.

RHP Will Sanders, South Carolina: Sanders fanned 14 Clemson batters over 7 innings to set a new career high.

OF/1B Jason Hinchman, Tenessee Tech.: Hinchman belted 4 home runs with 3 doubles, 6 runs scored and 10 RBI as he went 11-for-20 over 4 games. He delivered a home run in each game last week.

RHP Chris McElvain, Vanderbilt: McElvain struck out a career-high 13 batters over 7 innings during the opener against Hawaii. He retired half of the batters he faced via the strikeout.

OF Jud Fabian, Florida: Fabian belted 3 home runs, 1 double, scored 11 runs and recorded 7 RBI with 9 walks over 5 games.

RHP Tanner Hall, Southern Mississippi: Hall fanned a career-high 13 Mississippi St. batters during a 7-1 win over the Bulldogs in 7 innings.

OF Jake Hyde, Georgetown: Hyde accumulated 3 home runs, 8 runs scored and 7 RBI over 5 games as he went 13-for-24 at the plate and extended his hitting streak to 11 games. Prior to this week, Hyde had not a hit a home run as he begins his sophomore season.

RHP Mason Adams, Jacksonville: Adams struck out 13 Butler batters over 8 innings to tie the school record for most strikeouts in a game.

LF Cesar Valero, Sacramento St.: Valero had a remarkable game during a 21-4 win over Houston Baptist. He went 5-for-5 at the plate with 3 home runs, a triple and school-record 10 RBI.

C/OF Ryan Dyal, Auburn: Dyal collected 12 RBI over 6 games and went 7-for-19 with 2 homers, 3 doubles, 2 walks, 2 hit-by-pitches as he reached base 11 times and led the Tigers with 16 total bases.

C Tatem Levins, Pittsburgh: Levins belted 3 home runs with 1 double, 5 runs and 9 RBI as he went 6-for-13 at the plate.

2B Eduardo Malinowski, Virginia Tech.: Malinowski hit 3 home runs with 1 triple, 1 double, scored 6 runs and had 8 RBI as he went 7-for-15 at the plate.

1B/LHP TJ Clarkson, Utah: Clarkson was 8-for-17 at the plate over 5 games and hit 3 homers with 6 RBI. He added 6 runs with 3 walks and had a 1.000 slugging percentage.

3B Gunner Antillon, New Mexico St.: Antillon went 10-for-17 at the plate with 5 doubles and 2 triples.
