Collegiate Baseball Div 1 Poll (4-12-21)

ARKANSAS NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL POLL 

TUCSON, Ariz. — Arkansas (26-5) is ranked No. 1 for the fourth time this season in Collegiate Baseball’s NCAA Division I baseball poll presented by Big League Chew bubble gum.

The Razorbacks, which have won 14 of their last 16 games, are No. 1 in the Southeastern Conference Western Division with a 9-3 record. Last week, Arkansas won four of five games including two of three at Mississippi.

The Hogs are tied for the nation’s lead with 54 home runs. Thirteen different players have hit at least one home run this season. Arkansas is averaging 7.8 runs per game and has collected 108 extra base hits this season (54 homers, 8 triples, 46 doubles). Defensively, the Razorbacks have only allowed 18 stolen bases in 27 attempts over 31 games.

In key series across the USA, Vanderbilt lost two of three at home against Georgia, Tennessee won two of three at home against Florida, Texas Tech won two of three at home against Texas Christian, Louisville won two of three against Florida St. at home, Oregon swept a 3-game series at home against Oregon St., Stanford won two of three at home against UCLA, Notre Dame won two of three at home against Georgia Tech., Pittsburgh swept three from Miami (Fla.) at home and Wichita St. swept a 4-game series at home against Houston.

Poll Notes: Several teams have been red-hot. East Carolina has won 9 in a row, Texas and Ball St. 8 straight, Wichita St. and Mississippi St. 7 consecutive while Oklahoma St. and Louisiana Tech. have won 5 in a row. Five teams fell out of the top 30 this week in Oregon St. (1-4 last week), Miami (Fla.) (1-3), Georgia Tech. (1-3), San Diego (1-2) and Florida St. (1-3). New to the poll is Pittsburgh (17-10, won 5 of last 6), Louisiana Tech (24-7, 10-2 Conference USA), U.C. Santa Barbara (21-9, 12-4 Big West), Ball St. (19-9, 10-2 Mid-American) and Wichita St. (19-9, 7-1 American Athletic).

DH Ivan Melendez, Texas: Melendez had a monster week for the Longhorns as he belted 6 home runs in 5 games and collected 16 RBI as he went 10-for-18 at the plate. He also hit 2 doubles and scored 9 runs.

LHP Matt Mikulski, Fordham: Mikulski struck out a career-high 16 batters over 7 innings during a win against St. Bonaventure as he allowed just 1 hit. It was his fourth straight start with double-digit strikeouts.

2B Jace Jung, Texas Tech.: Jung hit 4 home runs with 9 RBI over three games as he went 7-for-13 at the plate with 5 runs scored.

RHP Jack Leiter, Vanderbilt: Leiter struck out 13 batters over 7 innings and only allowed 3 hits and 1 run against Georgia. It marks the fourth straight week Leiter has been named one of Collegiate Baseball’s National Players of The Week. He owns a 0.55 ERA on the season in 49 innings pitched.

OF Connor Tate, Georgia: Tate went 7-for-12 with 3 home runs, 2 doubles, 6 RBI, 6 runs scored and 2 walks against Vanderbilt which had led the nation in fewest hits allowed and was second nationally in ERA.

RHP Tyler Mattison, Bryant: Mattison struck out 15 batters over 8 scoreless innings against Fairleigh Dickinson. He fanned at least one batter in all 8 innings and struck out the side three times as he only allowed 4 hits.

1B Alex Binelas, Louisville: Binelas went 6-for-18 at the plate with 3 home runs, 1 double and 10 RBI with 5 runs scored over 4 games.

RF Gavin Cross, Virginia Tech.: Cross hit 3 home runs with 2 doubles, 1 triple and 9 RBI as he went 10-for-20 at the plate. Against East Tennessee St., he hit for the cycle as he went 4-for-6 with 7 RBI.

LHP Rodney Boone, U.C. Santa Barbara: Boone collected 14 strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings during an 11-1 win over Cal. St. Northridge as he only allowed 2 hits and 1 run. After allowing the first two batters to reach base in the first inning, the southpaw struck out 8 straight batters and retired 12 in a row.
