Collegiate Baseball Div 1 Poll (4-19-21)

ARKANSAS NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL POLL 

TUCSON, Ariz. — Arkansas (30-6) is ranked No. 1 for the fifth time this season in Collegiate Baseball’s NCAA Division I baseball poll presented by Big League Chew bubble gum.

The Razorbacks, which have won 18 of their last 21 games, are No. 1 in the Southeastern Conference Western Division with an 11-4 record. Last week, Arkansas won four of five games including two of three at home against Texas A&M.

Arkansas leads all NCAA Div. I schools with 70 home runs in 36 games and 306 runs scored (8.5 runs per game). The disciplined hitters have also walked 224 times, an average of 6.2 times per game, and collected 53 doubles and 8 triples.

In key series over the weekend, Vanderbilt took two of three at Tennessee, Texas Christian swept a 3-game series at home against Oklahoma St., Mississippi St. took two of three at home against Ole Miss., Stanford won two of three at Arizona St., Pittsburgh won two of three at home against North Carolina and Miami (Fla.) swept a 3-game series at home against Clemson

Poll Notes: Several teams have been red-hot. Texas has won 13 in a row, Stony Brook 15 of 16, Charlotte 11 of 12, Mississippi St. 10 of its last 11, East Carolina 9 straight and Florida, Michigan, and UCLA 5 consecutive.

Four teams fell out of the top 30 in Louisiana Tech. (2-2 last week), Sacramento St. (1-3), Ball St. (2-2) and Wichita St. (0-3). New to the poll is Oregon St. (won 3 in row, third place in Pac-12 at 10-5), Charlotte (first place in Conference USA at 14-2), Stony Brook (first place in America East at 15-1) and Miami, Fla. (21-11, won 4 straight).

The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1959 college baseball season.

RHP Alek Jacob, Gonzaga: Jacob threw a no-hitter during a 10-0 win over Pepperdine. It was the first no-no since 1990 at Gonzaga as he struck out a career-tying 12 and walked two.

RHP Elliot Carney, Wofford: Carney fired a no-hitter during a 5-0 win over N.C. Greensboro. He struck out 7 batters and walked 3. It marked the first no hitter in Wofford’s NCAA Division I history (since 1995).

RHP Steven Casey, Florida International: Casey threw the first no-hitter at Florida International since 2011 during a 5-0, 7-inning win over Marshall. He struck out 4 and walked 1. It was just the sixth no-no in program history.

DH Matt Goodheart, Arkansas: Goodheart belted 5 home runs and collected 10 RBI as he went 10-for-17 at the plate in four games. He also scored 10 runs and walked 5 times. Goodheart homered in four consecutive games which was the second time he has accomplished the feat this season.

LHP Doug Nikhazy, Mississippi.: Nikhazy threw a complete-game, 1-hit shutout against arch-rival Mississippi St. as he struck out 12 Bulldogs and walked two during a 9-0 win. Only three Mississippi State hitters reached base and none advanced past first base.

OF Evan Russell, Tennessee: Russell hit 4 home runs with 7 RBI as he went 4-for-14 at the plate over 4 games. He also scored 6 runs, walked 3 times and compiled 16 total bases. During a win over Vanderbilt, he drove in 6 of Tennessee’s eight runs.

LHP Mike Sansone, Fairfield: Sansone fired a complete game 7-inning victory and earned a save as he struck out 13 batters over 8 innings of work.

SS Jordan Sprinkle, U.C. Santa Barbara: Sprinkle went 10-for-18 over 4 games as he hit 2 homers, 3 doubles and knocked in 7 runs. He also scored 9 runs.

RHP Landon Marceaux, Louisiana St.: Marceaux struck out a career-high 12 South Carolina batters during a 5-1 win over the Gamecocks. He limited South Carolina to only three hits in seven scoreless innings with one walk. Of the 107 pitches he threw, 70 were strikes.

1B Bobby Seymour, Wake Forest: Seymour collected 3 home runs, 1 double and 11 RBI over 4 games as he went 5-for-16 at the plate and scored 6 runs. He also hit two grand slams during a 3-game series against Duke.

LHP Mason Montgomery, Texas Tech.: Montgomery struck out 12 West Virginia batters over 6 1/3 innings. He retired 10 consecutive Mountaineer hitters to begin the game and only allowed one run on two hits.

1B Alex Binelas, Louisville: Binelas hit 3 home runs, 2 doubles and compiled 7 RBI as he went 5-for-13 at the plate with 6 runs scored over three games against Virginia.

1B Alex Toral, Miami (Fla.): Toral belted 3 home runs with 4 RBI as he went 7-for-13 at the plate with 3 walks.
