Collegiate Baseball Div 1 Poll (4-24-23)

LSU NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL POLL 

TUCSON, Ariz. — Louisiana St. (32-7) is ranked No. 1 for the 11th straight time in Collegiate Baseball’s NCAA Division I baseball poll presented by Big League Chew bubble gum.

Over the past week, the Tigers lost to Louisiana-Lafayette at home but then rebounded with a 3-game sweep of Mississippi on the road.

LSU is averaging 10.1 runs per game (fourth in NCAA Div. I) and has an on-base percentage of .448 (No. 2 in the nation).  

In key series, Vanderbilt was swept three games at Tennessee, Arkansas was swept three games at Georgia, South Carolina swept a 3-game series at home against Florida, Virginia lost three at Notre Dame, Arizona St. took two of three at home against Oregon St., Kentucky lost two of three to Texas A&M at home, Louisville lost three at Duke, Texas was swept three games at home against Oklahoma, Wichita St. swept three from East Carolina, Boston College swept three from North Carolina, West Virginia swept three from Texas Christian and Coastal Carolina took two of three from Southern Mississippi.

Poll Notes: Several teams are on impressive winning streaks, including Dallas Baptist (14), Indiana St. (13), Central Michigan (9), Cal. St. Fullerton (7) and Indiana (7).

Six teams fell out of the top 30 in Louisville (lost 4 in a row), Texas (1-3), East Carolina (1-3), North Carolina (1-3), Texas Christian (lost 5 straight) and Texas-San Antonio (2-2).

New to the poll is Oklahoma St., Boston College, West Virginia, Wichita St., Tennessee and Duke.

The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1959 college baseball season.

LHP TJ Fondtain, San Diego St.: Fondtain fired a 9-inning no-hitter during a 4-0 win over Nevada. He had a perfect game through eight innings before walking the leadoff batter in the ninth. He then retired the next three batters to complete the eighth no-hitter in program history. Fondtain struck out 14 batters in the 127-pitch outing.

3B Ryan Peltier, Ball St.: Peltier had an incredible week as he belted 5 home runs, 1 triple and collected 12 RBI with 7 runs scored. Defensively, he was perfect as he made 3 putouts and had 5 assists.

1B Cooper McMurray, Auburn: McMurray hit 5 home runs with 7 runs scored and 9 RBI as he went 5-for-12 over 4 games. He collected 20 total bases.

1B/DH Peter DeMaria, Fordham: DeMaria belted 5 home runs, 1 double and collected 8 RBI with 7 runs scored as he went 7-for-14 at the plate over 4 games.

RHP Colten Davis, Texas Rio Grande Valley: Davis had the best outing of his career as he struck out 12 Abilene Christian batters over 8 innings without allowing a run and no walks. He faced two over the minimum.

3B Austin Deming, Brigham Young: Deming had a remarkable week as he went 12-for-17 with 4 home runs, 4 doubles, scored 11 runs and collected 15 RBI. He totaled 30 bases. In game three against N.C. Greensboro, he hit a 2-out grand slam in the seventh inning that won the game.

1B Kyle Vinci, Princeton: Vinci belted 4 home runs over 4 games and collected 15 RBI as he went 7-for-16 with 6 runs scored. Among the home runs were two grand slams.

RHP Nathanial Tate, East Tennessee St.: Tate fired a 9-inning complete game shutout with a career-high 13 strikeouts during a win against The Citadel

C Carter Sanford, Mercer: Mercer belted home runs in all 4 games last week as he collected 9 RBI and 8 runs scored.

3B Cam Smith, Florida St.: Smith hit 4 home runs over 4 games as he scored 8 runs and drove in 6. He went 6-for-17 at the plate.

RHP Keifer Lord, Washington: Lord matched his career-high of 8 innings against No. 11 Stanford as he only allowed 3 hits with 10 strikeouts. He retired the final 16 batters he faced.
