Collegiate Baseball Div 1 Poll (4-26-21)

ARKANSAS NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL POLL 

TUCSON, Ariz. — Arkansas (32-7) is ranked No. 1 for the sixth time this season in Collegiate Baseball’s NCAA Division I baseball poll presented by Big League Chew bubble gum.

The Razorbacks, first in the Southeastern Conference Western Division with a 13-5 record, took two of three at South Carolina over the weekend.

Arkansas leads all NCAA Div. I schools with 74 home runs in 39 games with 13 players hitting circuit clouts. The Hogs are averaging 8.1 runs per game and have also hit 56 doubles and walked 240 times (No. 1 in NCAA Div. I, 6.1 per game) and been hit by 50 pitches. Fifteen different batters have been plunked this season.

In key series over the past weekend, Vanderbilt took two of three at home against Mississippi St., Texas took two of three at Oklahoma St., Oregon beat UCLA two of three at home, Arizona swept a 3-game series at home against Southern California, U.C. Irvine took two of three from Oregon St. at home and Charlotte won three of four against Old Dominion at home

Poll Notes: Several teams have been red-hot with Fairfield leading the way at 26-0. Texas has won 16 of its last 17, Tulane 10 straight while South Alabama has won 8 in a row and Arizona 6 consecutive.

RHP Arlo Marynczak, Siena: Marynczak tossed a 7-inning no-hitter in his first collegiate start during a 14-1 win over Saint Peter’s. He allowed only one unearned run while striking out a career-high 10 batters. Marynczak retired 14 batters in a row at one point.

RHP Connor Bovair, Siena: Bovair struck out 17 Saint Peter’s batters during a 7-inning, 8-1 win. He scattered 4 hits and allowed one run. His 17 strikeouts are tied for the most nationally by a pitcher in a 7-inning NCAA Div. I game.

1B T.J. Collett, Kentucky: Collett belted 4 home runs with 7 RBI over 4 games as he went 5-for-15 with 5 runs scored.

RHP Sam Benschoter, Michigan St.: Benschoter struck out a career-high 17 Nebraska batters over 9 1/3 innings of relief in a 12-inning loss to the Cornhuskers. It was the most amount of strikeouts for a Spartan pitcher since Mark Mulder’s 16 against Campbell during the 1998 season.

DH Clay Owens, Southern California: Owens hit 4 home runs with 6 RBI and 4 runs scored as he went 6-for-14 over 4 games.

RHP Kevin Kopps, Arkansas: Kopps was unhittable in two relief appearances against South Carolina as he struck out 12 of the 15 batters he faced and didn’t allow a hit in 5 innings of work. He threw 43 of his 59 pitches for strikes and generated 19 swing and misses while not allowing a single baserunner.

RHP Landen Bourassa, San Francisco: Bourassa tied a San Francisco 75-year-old record with 16 strikeouts during a 5-0 win over Portland as he fired a complete game with no walks. The last time a San Francisco pitcher struck out 16 was in 1946 when Don pitcher Con Dempsey, Sr. accomplished the feat against Saint Mary’s.

RF Phillip Sikes, Texas Christian: Sikes belted 3 homers, 3 doubles and went 7-for-16 at the plate as he recorded 6 RBI and scored 4 runs.

LHP Matt Mikulski, Fordham: Mikulski struck out 15 Saint Joseph’s batters during a 7-inning, 3-1 win. He only allowed two hits.

RHP Riley Gowens, Illinois: Gowens was part of a combined no-hitter during a 1-0 win over Purdue. It was the 11th no-hitter in program history as Gowens went the first 7 innings without allowing a hit and struck out 6. Two other pitchers followed to close out the no-no.

RHP Scott Randall, Sacramento St.: Randall struck out 14 batters during a 4-2 win over Northern Colorado. It marked the second time this season he has fanned 14 in a game.

LHP Andrew Abbott, Virginia: For the second time this season, Abbott fanned 14 batters — the most in a single game by an Atlantic Coast Conference pitcher this year. This time it was over 7 innings against Duke. He is the ACC leader in strikeouts with 91.
