VANDERBILT NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Vanderbilt (23-3) is ranked No. 1 for the third straight week in Collegiate Baseball’s NCAA Division I baseball poll presented by Big League Chew bubble gum.

The Commodores, winners of eight straight and 20 of their last 22, swept a 3-game series on the road at Louisiana St. over the past weekend. It was the first-ever series sweep for the Commodores at LSU.

Vanderbilt is ranked in the top 10 in nine NCAA Div. I statistical categories, including batting average (3), home runs per game (9), doubles per game (6), triples per game (2), slugging percentage (2), on-base percentage (3), scoring (8), earned run average (3) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (10).

The Commodores are hitting .319 with 40 homers, 62 doubles and 15 triples while stealing 33 of 36 bases. The pitching staff has a 2.24 ERA with 307 strikeouts, 87 walks and have only given up 5.2 hits per game.

In key series over the weekend, Florida beat Mississippi two of three at home, Tennessee won two of three at Alabama, South Carolina won two of three at Georgia, Arizona took two of three at Arizona St. and Texas Christian swept a 3-game series at Oklahoma.

Poll Notes: Several teams have been red-hot. Texas Christian has won 9 straight, Old Dominion 7 in a row, Sacramento St. 9 of its last 10, while Miami, Fla., Oregon and East Carolina have each won 5 consecutive games.

Four teams fell out of the top 30 in North Carolina (1-5 last week), Kentucky (1-3), Indiana (0-4) and Southern Illinois (1-3). New to the poll is Miami, Fla. (5 straight wins), Sacramento St. (wins in 9 of last 10 games), Nebraska (tied for first in Big Ten with 13-5 record) and Old Dominion (21-5, first in Conference USA with 7-1 record and 7 straight wins).

The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1959 college baseball season.

RHP Jimmy Borzone, Dixie State: Borzone fired the second no-hitter in Dixie State’s NCAA era during a 5-1, 7-inning victory over Tarleton St. He struck out 8 batters and walked one.

LHP Seth Lonsway, Ohio State: Lonsway struck out a career-high 17 batters during a 6-0, 7-inning win over Indiana. The achievement is amazing when you consider there are only 21 outs in a 7-inning game. Lonsway only allowed 2 hits.

RHP Nick Sinacola, Maine: Sinacola struck out 15 batters over 7 innings during a 2-0 complete game win over Binghamton. He allowed 3 hits and 2 walks.

RHP Jack Leiter, Vanderbilt: For the third straight week, Leiter has been named one of Collegiate Baseball’s National Players of The Week. Against Louisiana St., he struck out 12 batters over 6 innings and only allowed 3 hits. A remarkable streak came to an end. He had not given up a hit in 20 2/3 innings over his last three games before a leadoff single by LSU in the fifth inning ended it. Leiter has only allowed 10 hits in 42 innings this season and has posted a 7-0 record and 0.43 ERA with 71 strikeouts.

RHP Brett Walker, Oregon: Walker struck out 13 in 6 innings against New Mexico St. with only 2 hits and no runs. What made the achievement even more remarkable was that he entered the game with just 15 strikeouts on the season in his first five starts, including a then career-high 5 in a win over Arizona. Walker struck out at least one batter in all 6 innings.

RHP Gavin Williams, East Carolina: Williams struck out a career-high 13 batters over 6 2/3 innings during a 7-0 win over Cincinnati. Over his last two starts, he has not allowed a run in 12 2/3 innings.

INF/OF Jacob Melton, Oregon St.: Melton was 11-for-18 for the week and hit 3 home runs in one game against Utah. It was the first time since 2001 that a Beaver batter has hit a trio of homers in one game.

2B Jace Jung, Texas Tech.: Jung belted 3 home runs during a 17-1 win over Kansas St. and collected 4 RBI as he went 3-for-6 with 3 runs scored.

2B Carson Johnson, Charlotte: Johnson led Charlotte to a 4-game sweep over Florida Atlantic as he was 9-for-15 at the plate and had hits in 7 straight at-bats at one point. He collected 7 RBI and scored 6 runs with 1 home run and 1 double with no strikeouts.

OF/1B Dylan Brewer, Clemson: Brewer belted 3 home runs and 1 double as he knocked in 10 runs with 4 runs scored over 4 games last week.

1B Austin Murr, N.C. State: Murr belted 3 home runs with 8 RBI as he was 10-for-27 at the plate over six games. He also hit 3 doubles, 1 triple and scored 10 runs.
