Collegiate Baseball Div. 1 Poll (5-1-23)

LSU NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL POLL 

TUCSON, Ariz. — Louisiana St. (35-8) is ranked No. 1 for the 12th straight time in Collegiate Baseball’s NCAA Division I baseball poll presented by Big League Chew bubble gum.

Over the past week, the Tigers lost to Nicholls St. at home and then rebounded with three straight wins at home against Alabama.

LSU is No. 2 among NCAA Div. I schools in on-base percentage (.447) and No. 3 in scoring (10 runs per game) and slugging percentage (.573).

In key series, South Carolina lost two of three at home to Auburn, Arizona St. lost two of three at Oregon and split two with Cal. St. Fullerton earlier in the week, Vanderbilt swept three at home against Kentucky, Arkansas won three at home against Texas A&M, Virginia lost two of three against Duke at home, Stanford won two of three at home against UCLA, Miami (Fla.) won two of three at Louisville, Boston College lost two of three at home to Clemson, Kansas St. won two of three at home against Texas Tech., Maryland swept three at Indiana, Tennessee won three at home against Mississippi St. and Coastal Carolina won two of three at Louisiana-Lafayette.  

Poll Notes: Several teams are on impressive winning streaks, including West Virginia (8), Maryland (7), Oklahoma St. (7) and Tennessee (7).

Four teams fell out of the top 30 in Kentucky (lost 4 in row), Texas Tech. (1-2), Indiana (1-3) and Wichita St. (2-2).

New to the poll is Maryland (30-15, first in Big Ten with 11-4 record), Clemson (28-17, fourth in Atlantic Division of ACC with 11-10 record), Kansas St. (28-17, second in Big 12 at 11-7) and Southern Mississippi (28-15, second in Sun Belt at 14-7).

The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1959 college baseball season.

RHP Tanner Hall, Southern Mississippi: Hall struck out 15 Arkansas St. batters over 7 innings and allowed only 3 hits.

3B Mac Horvath, North Carolina: Horvath belted 5 home runs with 19 RBI over 4 games. His 19 RBI are the most over a 4-game stretch in school history.

1B John Dyer, Tennessee Tech.: Dyer hit 5 home runs with 9 RBI over a 3-game series at Eastern Illinois. He has now hit home runs in five consecutive games.

INF John Anderson, Samford: Anderson hit 5 home runs over 4 games and collected 15 RBI while scoring 6 runs as he went 8-for-18.

RHP Nick Parker, Virginia: Parker fanned a career-high 12 batters in 6 2/3 innings during a 10-2 win over Duke. He retired 11 of the final 13 batters.

1B/LHP Caden Grice, Clemson: Grice had a memorable week as he went 7-for-16 at the plate with 2 homers, 3 doubles and 10 RBI. He also earned a win as a pitcher against Boston College as he struck out 9 over 8 innings and only allowed 2 hits and one earned run.

OF Nolan Tichy, Massachusetts: Tichy hit 4 home runs with 5 runs scored, 13 RBI and swiped 3 bases over 5 games as he went 13-for-22.

DH Brandon Larson, U.C. San Diego: Larson collected 10 RBI as he belted 4 home runs and went 6-for-16 with 5 runs scored.

SS Drew Cowley, Oregon: Cowley hit 4 home runs with 10 RBI as he went 8-for-19 at the plate with 5 runs scored.

1B Jake McMurray, Oral Roberts: Going into the week, McMurray had not homered all season. Then he went 7-for-13 with 4 homers, 7 RBI and scored 6 runs

1B Cade Sullivan, Western Michigan: Sullivan belted 4 homers with 11 RBI and scored 5 times as he went 6-for-14.

RHP Jake Bloss, Georgetown: Bloss struck out 12 St. John’s batters over 7 innings and only surrendered 1 hit and no runs.

3B Jay Thomason, Air Force: Thomason had a game for the ages as he reached base in all seven of his plate appearances during a 24-12 win over San Jose St. as he recorded 10 RBI, 6 hits and 2 home runs. Over 3 games, he was 10-for-15 with 3 home runs and 12 RBI.

1B/RHP Jackson Finley, Georgia Tech.: Finley hit 4 home runs, 2 doubles and racked up 12 RBI over 4 games. He also pitched 5 innings against Gardner-Web and struck out 4.

UT Jozsef Rohrbacher, Mercer: Rohrbacher hit 4 home runs with 12 RBI over 4 games as he scored 6 runs and went 8-for-15.
