Collegiate Baseball Div 1 Poll (5-10-21)

ARKANSAS NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL POLL 

TUCSON, Ariz. — Arkansas (36-9) is ranked No. 1 for the eighth time this season in Collegiate Baseball’s NCAA Division I baseball poll presented by Big League Chew bubble gum.

The Razorbacks took two of three at home against Georgia and are in first place in the Southeastern Conference Western Division with a 17-7 record.

Arkansas is second in the nation with 78 home runs in 45 games and have also hit 69 doubles and 10 triples. This highly disciplined offense has also walked 263 times (5th in the USA, 5.8 per game) and been hit by 52 pitches. The pitching staff has struck out 461 batters and walked 163.

In key series across the nation, Texas took two of three at Texas Christian, Mississippi St. won two of three at South Carolina, Stanford won two of three at home against Arizona, Notre Dame lost two of three at home to Florida St., East Carolina won three of four at home against Tulane, U.C. Irvine won three of four at U.C. Santa Barbara and Georgia Tech. swept a 3-game series at home against Clemson.

Five teams fell out of the top 30 this week in Tulane (1-3 last week), U.C. Santa Barbara (1-3), Clemson (1-3), Old Dominion (2-2) and Central Michigan (2-2). New to the poll is Charlotte (first in Conference USA at 22-6), Georgia Tech. (first in the ACC Coastal Division at 18-12), Dallas Baptist (first in the Missouri Valley Conference at 14-2), Southern Mississippi (second in Conference USA at 20-7) and Florida St. (third in the Atlantic Division of the ACC with a 17-13 record).

Poll Notes: Several teams have been red-hot. Dallas Baptist has won 6 in a row, Fairfield 5 straight while Tennessee and Charlotte have won 4 consecutive.

RHP Walker Powell, Southern Mississippi: Powell fired a 7-inning no-hitter against Rice as he struck out a career-high 12 batters. He only needed 89 pitches to throw the no-no with 60 pitches being strikes. He came close to throwing a perfect game. The only batter to get on base was a leadoff walk to start the second.

RHP Justin Campbell, Oklahoma St.: Campbell became only the third pitcher in the 110-year history of Oklahoma St. baseball to throw a no-hitter during a 19-0 win over Kansas. He struck out 11 and was one walk from throwing a perfect game in the 99-pitch outing.

RHP Austin Vernon, North Carolina Central: Vernon fired an 8-inning no-hitter with 8 strikeouts during a 10-0 win over Delaware St. He also flirted with a perfect game. The only runner he allowed was via a 2-out walk in the top of the seventh.

LHP Nicholas Dombkowski, Hartford: Dombkowski threw a 9-inning no-hitter and struck out 9 during a 4-0 win over Albany.

1B Will Frizzell, Texas A&M: Frizzell belted 5 home runs over 4 games and collected 7 extra-base hits, including 2 doubles, while compiling 11 RBI and scoring 8 runs. His week was highlighted by a walk-off homer in game one against Mississippi and a game-winning grand slam in game three against Ole Miss.

RHP Hunter Stanley, Southern Mississippi: Stanley struck out 16 batters over nine innings in the opener of the Middle Tennessee series and only surrendered two hits and no walks.

2B Andrew Pintar, Brigham Young: Pintar belted 3 home runs, a double and a triple as he collected 8 RBI and scored 7 times as he went 10-for-21 over 4 games. He amassed 19 total bases.

RHP Emmet Sheehan, Boston College: Sheehan struck out 15 Pittsburgh batters over 7 innings of work and didn’t allow a hit until the fifth inning.

C Andy Thomas, Baylor: Thomas hit 3 home runs with 9 RBI and 18 total bases as he went 8-for-11 at the plate as he had multiple hits in all three games against Kansas St.

SS Carter Young, Vanderbilt: Young belted 3 homers, walked 4 times and went 3-for-9 at the plate over 3 games. He has hit a team-high 13 home runs this season.
