Collegiate Baseball Div 1 Poll (5-13-19)

UCLA NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — UCLA (41-8) is ranked No. 1 for the sixth straight week in the latest Collegiate Baseball NCAA Div. I baseball poll presented by Big League Chew.  

The Bruins, winners of 20 of their last 22, beat Long Beach St once and Washington St. three times last week.

UCLA is No. 1 in the nation with a 2.70 ERA and also No. 1 with 9 shutouts. The Bruins are No. 2 in NCAA Div. I with 6.32 hits allowed per nine innings. The pitching staff has struck out 505 batters and walked 160. On defense, UCLA has a .982 fielding percentage (fifth in USA) and has only allowed 18 stolen bases in 35 attempts over 49 games.

Poll Notes: Several teams are red-hot. Central Michigan has won 11 in a row, U.C. Santa Barbara nine straight while Mississippi St. has won five consecutive.

In key series across the USA during the past week, Louisville lost two of three at home against Virginia, Stanford won two of three at California, Arkansas won two of three at home against Louisiana St., Mississippi St. swept a 3-game series at Mississippi, Georgia won two of three at Auburn, North Carolina lost two of three at Pittsburgh, Oregon St. won two of three at Oregon, Georgia Tech. won two of three at Duke, Oklahoma St. won two of three against Oklahoma, Arizona St. lost two of three at Nebraska, Indiana won two of three at Michigan and N.C. State won two of three at home against Clemson,  

Two teams fell out of the top 30 in Iowa (1-2 last week) and Duke (1-3). New to the poll is West Virginia (31-18) and Dallas Baptist (36-15).

The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1959 college baseball season.

DH Bryce Ball, Dallas Baptist: Ball belted 5 home runs over 4 games with 13 RBI as he went 8-for-15 at the plate. He also scored 7 runs and posted a 1.600 slugging percentage.

RHP Alek Manoah, West Virginia: Manoah struck out 13 batters over 8 innings during a 6-0 win over Kansas St. He only allowed 3 hits and no runs. He now has 121 strikeouts on the season, second-most in program history.

RHP John Baker, Ball State: Baker combined with Luke Jaksich for a no-hitter during Ball State’s 5-0 win over Ohio. Baker started the game and pitched the first 7 innings, striking out 10 and coming out after 116 pitches. Jaksich got the final 6 outs. It was the first 9-inning no-hitter in Ball State history.

SS Jackson Cluff, Brigham Young: Cluff went 9-for-16 with 6 extra base hits over 4 games. He collected 5 doubles, 1 homer and 9 RBI. He also scored 7 runs, walked 4 times and had 2 stolen bases.

1B Mason Mallard, Louisiana Tech.: Mallard was 11-for-15 at the plate over 4 games and collected 7 doubles, 5 RBI and scored 9 runs. He also walked 3 times. Overall, he posted a 1.200 slugging percentage and reached base at a .737 clip for the week.

RHP Easton Rhodehouse, Valparaiso: In two relief outings, Rhodehouse racked up 10 strikeouts over 7 scoreless innings. He was the hero of Valparaiso’s 4-3 victory over Southern Illinois in 14 innings. He entered the game in the ninth inning and pitched 6 no-hit innings as he earned the win. He also worked a scoreless inning during the middle of the week against Michigan State.
