Collegiate Baseball Div 1 Poll (5-2-22)

TENNESSEE NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Tennessee (40-4) is ranked No. 1 for the sixth straight Collegiate Baseball NCAA Division I baseball poll presented by Big League Chew bubble gum.

The Volunteers, winners of 9 of their last 10 games, lead the Southeastern Conference with a 19-2 record. Over the past weekend, Tennessee won two of three against Auburn at home.

The Volunteers have been sensational on offense and pitching this season. Tennessee has belted 103 homers, 107 doubles, walked 263 times and been hit by 48 pitches times for a .424 on-base percentage. The Volunteers are averaging 9.4 runs per game.

The pitching staff has a 2.20 ERA with 492 strikeouts and 108 walks.

Poll Notes: In key series over the weekend, Georgia Tech. took two of three from Miami (Fla.), Arkansas won two of three against Ole Miss., Stanford lost two of three at Washington, Oregon St. won two of three at Utah, Texas A&M won two of three at Vanderbilt, Oklahoma St. swept a 3-game series at Texas, Louisville swept a 3-game series against Clemson, UCLA swept a 3-game series against Arizona St., U.C. Santa Barbara swept a 3-game series against Cal. Poly, Virginia Tech. won two of three at Virginia, Florida St. won two at home against Texas Christian, Ball. St. swept a 4-game series at home against Central Michigan, LSU won two of three against Georgia and Rutgers won three at Ohio St.  

Several teams have been hot. Ball St. has won 8 in a row, Virginia Tech. (8 of last 9), Connecticut (6), Louisville (5) and Rutgers (5).

Three teams fell out of the top 30 in Central Michigan (4 losses in a row), Texas (3 straight losses) and Cal. Poly (5 losses in a row).

LHP Ryan Ramsey, Maryland: Ramsey fired a 9-inning perfect game against Northwestern during a 13-0 win for the Terps. He became the first Maryland pitcher to toss a perfect game since Dick Reitz during the 1959 season against Johns Hopkins. Heading into the 2022 season, there had only been 19 nine-inning perfect games in NCAA Div. I baseball history.

C Jacob Campbell, Illinois: Campbell has homered in five consecutive games with five total homers. In four games last week, he was 8-for-19 at the plate with 4 homers, 12 RBI and 7 runs scored.

CF Ryan Lasko, Rutgers: Lasko belted 5 home runs, 3 doubles, scored 9 runs and drove in 14 runs as he went 14-for-21 at the plate.  

OF Tayler Aguilar, Grand Canyon: Aguilar hit 5 home runs with 13 RBI as he hit .471 on the week.

LHP Parker Messick, Florida St.: Messick tied a career high with 14 strikeouts during a 10-0 win against Texas Christian. It marked the third time this season he has reached that mark. The southpaw took a perfect game into the fifth inning and no-hitter into the sixth before giving up two hits in the game. Messick has not given up a run in 28 2/3 innings.

SS Pascanel Ferreras, Western Carolina: Ferreras went 9-for-18 as he collected 4 home runs, 3 doubles and posted 8 RBI with a 1.333 slugging percentage and 5 runs scored over 4 games.

RHP Jared Poland, Louisville: Poland posted 8 shutout innings with 13 strikeouts during a 7-2 win over Clemson. He retired 14 of the final 15 batters he faced.

3B Max Wagner, Clemson: Wagner hit 4 homers, 2 doubles and collected 14 RBI with 11 runs scored as he went 13-for-20 at the plate over 5 games. He reached base via a hit or walk in 17 of his 24 plate appearances.

RHP Matt Willadsen, N.C. State: Willadsen fanned a career-high 13 batters over 7 innings against Radford and didn’t allow a run to score.

SS Josh Hood, N.C. State: Hood belted 4 home runs with 1 double, 11 RBI and scored 5 runs as he went 5-for-16.

C Kevin Parada, Georgia Tech.: Parada hit 4 home runs with 8 RBI, 4 runs scored and went 6-for-17 at the plate.

DH/LHP Jordan Hamberg, Coppin St.: Hamberg did it all for Coppin St. last week. Offensively, he belted 2 homers, 2 doubles, scored 3 runs and had 5 RBI with 7 walks and a pair of stolen bases. On the mound, he struck out 12 batters in 6 innings of work during a 4-2 win over Maryland Eastern Shore.

RHP Ian Mejia, New Mexico St.: Mejia fanned 13 Dixie State batters over 7 innings. The 13 strikeouts were the second highest single-game total for New Mexico State this season.
