Collegiate Baseball Div 1 Poll (5-29-23)

WAKE FOREST NO. 1 IN CB’S LATEST POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Wake Forest (47-10) is ranked No. 1 for the fourth straight time in Collegiate Baseball’s NCAA Division I baseball poll presented by Big League Chew bubble gum.

The Demon Deacons, which captured the regular-season Atlantic Coast Conference title, posted a 2-1 record in the ACC tournament with wins over Pittsburgh, Notre Dame and a loss to Miami, Fla.

Wake Forest leads all NCAA Div. I schools in six categories, including ERA (2.82), hits allowed per nine innings (6.67), shutouts by pitching staff (9), strikeout-to-walk ratio (4.31), WHIP (1.05) and won-loss percentage (.825).

Poll Notes: Several teams are on impressive winning streaks, including Oral Roberts (18) and Clemson (16).  

Three teams fell out of the top 30 in Kent St. (2-2 last week), Duke (4 straight losses) and U.C. Santa Barbara (4 consecutive losses).  

New to the poll is Iowa (42-14, won 8 of last 10, finished second at Big Ten Tournament), Texas Christian (6 straight wins, won Big 12 Tournament) and Oregon (6 consecutive wins, won Pac-12 Tournament).

The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1959 college baseball season.

LHP/1B Caden Grice, Clemson: Grice was named MVP of the ACC tournament as he led Clemson to a 4-0 record. He pitched 7 strong innings during a 10-4 win over North Carolina as he struck out 9 batters to earn the win. At the plate over 4 games, he was 7-for-19 with 2 homers, a double, 9 RBI and 6 runs scored.

RHP Ryan Watson, Georgia St.: Watson struck out a career-high 13 in 6 2/3 scoreless innings during an 8-5 win over Georgia Southern in the Sun Belt Tournament. He only walked 1 batter.

LHP Justin Lamkin, Texas A&M: Lamkin only allowed 1 hit over 7 innings during a 5-0 win against South Carolina in the SEC Tournament. He struck out 9 Gamecock batters.

SS Adam Tellier, Ball St.: Tellier earned MVP honors during the Mid-American Conference Tournament as he collected 2 homers, including a grand slam and 3-run homer. He also hit a double and went 5-for-14 with 9 RBI.

RHP Jake Eddington, Missouri St.: Eddington struck out a career-high 10 Murray St. batters over 5 innings during the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament.
