LSU NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Louisiana St. (37-7) is ranked No. 1 for the second straight time in the Collegiate Baseball NCAA Division I poll presented by Big League Chew bubble gum.

The Tigers have won 14 of their last 16 and took two of three at home against Texas A&M over the past weekend. LSU is No. 1 in the Southeastern Conference Western Division with a 14-6 record.

The Tigers feature a team ERA of 2.87 with 370 strikeouts and 152 walks. Offensively, LSU is hitting .320 with 38 homers, 20 triples and 98 doubles over 44 games and stolen 78 bases.

In key series over the past weekend, Florida St. took two of three at Miami, Fla., Texas Christian won three straight at home against Texas, Oklahoma St. won two of three at Texas Tech., Southern California lost two of three at Oregon St., Vanderbilt won three straight at home against Missouri, California swept Arizona three straight on the road and Iowa swept three from Nebraska at home.

Poll Notes: Several teams have been red-hot. Illinois set a school record with its 17th consecutive win. College of Charleston has won 18 of its last 20,Texas Christian has won 8 straight and North Carolina 6 in a row.

Three teams fell out of the top 30 in Missouri (0-4 last week), U.C. Irvine (1-3) and Notre Dame (2-3). New to the poll is Rice (29-16), North Carolina (29-15) and Ohio St. (31-10).

The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1959 college baseball season.

NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

  • RHP Kevin Hill, South Alabama: Hill struck out a career-high 15 batters during a 9-inning complete game 1-hitter against Georgia St. in an 8-0 win. He carried a no-hitter into the ninth inning as he recorded his seventh consecutive win. At one point, he retired 16 consecutive Georgia State batters from the third to the eighth inning.
  • OF Kyle Clement, Louisiana-Lafayette: Clement belted 3 home runs, 3 doubles and drove in 9 runs as he went 10-for-21 at the plate. He provided the game-winning run in 4 of the 5 wins on the week.
  • LHP Jeff Singer, Rutgers-Camden: Singer tossed the seventh no-hitter in program history during a 7-0 win over Montclair St. He struck out 10 batters.
  • RHP Dan Scheibe, Whitworth: Scheibe fired the first 9-inning no-hitter by a Whitworth pitcher in the metal bat era during a 2-0 win over Linfield. After Eric Lawson reached on an error in the first inning, Sheibe retired the next 19 Wildcats. Overall, he struck out 11 Linfield batters.
  • LHP Philip Pfeifer, Vanderbilt: Pfeifer dominated Missouri in his first start since 2013 as he struck out a career-high 13 batters over 7 innings. He racked up 7 strikeouts the first time through the lineup and only allowed one base runner past second base through the first 6 innings.
  • INF Zander Wiel, Vanderbilt: Wiel belted 3 home runs, 1 double, scored 6 runs and knocked in 8 runs as he went 7-for-15 at the plate over 4 games..
  • OF John Brue, Saint Joseph’s: Brue knocked in 10 runs as he went 9-for-21 at the plate with 2 home runs, 2 doubles and 6 walks. He hit safely in all five games last week.
  • INF Tim Lynch, Southern Mississippi: Lynch belted 3 homers with 7 RBI over 4 games as he scored 7 runs.
