CB’s National H.S. 2017 Pre-Season Poll

TUCSON, Ariz. — Archbishop McCarthy (Southwest Ranches, FL) is ranked No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball’s 2017 National High School Baseball Pre-Season poll.

Last season the Mavericks (29-2) set a Florida State record by capturing their sixth state championship in the past seven years.

The team hit .375 with 78 doubles, 12 triples, 30 home runs and swiped 64 of 75 bases on offense. The pitching staff had a team ERA of 2.21, 221 strikeouts and only 76 walks.

With only four seniors graduating from that team, Archbishop McCarthy returns seven starting position players and six key pitchers. Twelve players have signed or committed to a university. Nine of the returners are seniors this year.

On paper, it could be the best team in school history.

Headlining the team is 1B Alex Toral who committed with Miami and is likely to be selected in the Major League Draft next June. He hit .310 with 3 doubles, 4 home runs, 19 RBI and walked 37 times last season.

Adding power to the lineup will be 3B Joe Perez (Miami commit, 8 2B, 4 HR, 37 RBI), C Adan Fernandez (Florida International commit, 9 2B, 7 HR, 32 RBI), CF AJ Hendricks (Belmont Abbey commit, .463, 10 2B, 3 HR, 28 RBI) and 2B Ubaldo Lopez (Dartmouth commit, .308, 9 2B, 4 HR, 28 RBI).

Top pitchers include RHP Daniel Federman (Miami commit, returns from injury in 2016), sophomore LHP Yordani Carmona (Miami commit, 8-0, 1.19 ERA, 42 K, 41.1 IP), RHP Johnny Leone (Nova Southeastern commit, 6-2, 1.79 ERA, 39 K), and RHP Jose Martinez (St. Joseph’s commit, 6-0, 3.60 ERA, 32 K).
