Collegiate Baseball H.S. Poll 3-27-17

ARCHBISHOP McCARTHY H.S. NO. 1 IN CB POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Archbishop McCarthy (Southwest Ranches, FL) is ranked No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball’s National High School Poll with an 11-0 record.

The Mavericks are undefeated as they head into USA Baseball’s National High School Invitational in Cary, N.C. where they will meet Arlington (TN) in first round action.

Archbishop McCarthy is hitting .365 with 11 homers, 20 doubles and averaging 8.5 runs per game. The pitching staff has a microscopic 1.58 ERA with 124 strikeouts and 25 walks over 11 games.

Leading the way has been Joe Perez who is hitting .686 with 4  homers, 8 doubles and 19 RBI. On the mound, he is 2-0 in 5 appearances with a 2.00 ERA, 32 strikeouts and 9 walks over 14 innings.

The most recent wins were highlighted by a 7-1 victory over rival American Heritage (Plantation, FL). The offense was sparked by senior catcher Drew Fernandez who went 2-for-3 with two doubles. Adan Fernandez belted a 3-run homer.

Buchanan (Clovis, CA) is No. 2 at 13-0. The Bears have battled conference competition that included wins over Clovis (3-1), Central (9-0), Clovis East (2-0) and Clovis West (2-1).

No. 3 Huntington Beach (CA) also is undefeated with a 9-0 record. Leading the team is Nick Pratto who pitched a complete game shutout over Edison, 1-0. He also blasted two home runs in a 9-0 win over Los Alamitos. The Oilers head to Cary, N.C. for the NHSI tournament and face Winder-Barrow (FL) in the first round.

No. 4 North Gwinnett (Suwanee, GA) has won 18 games in a row to kick off the 2017 season.

The pitching staff has a 1.49 Team ERA and is led by RHP Jake Brace (5-0, 0.45 ERA, 29 K, 4 BB), LHP Walker Cleveland (4-0, 2.13 ERA, 20 K) and RHP Cade Heil (3-0, 1.94 ERA, 46 K). Top hitters are Michael Borah (.500, 8 2B, 4 3B, 2 HR, 18 RBI) and Parker Coyne (.450, 5 2B, 1 HR, 19 RBI).

No. 5 Canterbury (Fort Myers, FL) has a 12-1 record as they head into the National High School Invitational tournament. They will face Hamilton (Chandler, AZ). Canterbury just played in the IMG National Classic and went 3-1 in the tournament.

No. 6 Shawnee (OK) remains undefeated with a 13-0 record. Leading the offence are SS/P Tanner Sparks (.636, 7 HR, 3 2B, 2 3B, 39 RBI) and C Jake Taylor (.619 9 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR, 18 RBI). Sparks also is 5-0 on the mound with a 1.48 ERA, 40 strikeouts and 7 walks in 23.2 innings.

No. 7 South Hills (West Covina, CA) posted a 9-1 record to start the season. Pitching has been strong with the staff posting a 1.01 Team ERA. Top pitchers include Brandon Dieter (3-1, 0.56 ERA, 24 K), Zack Bromstead (3-0, 1.71 ERA, 21 K) and Karlos Morales (3-0, 1.95 ERA, 14 K).

George Ranch (Richmond, TX) moves up to No. 8 with an 18-1 record and No. 1 ranking in Texas 6A polls. The Longhorns suffered only one loss earlier this month to Stratford (Houston, TX), 3-1 and have a current 7-game win streak.

No. 9 Malvern Prep (Malvern, PA) kicked off its season with a 3-0 win over Fr. Judge (Philadelphia, PA).

Moving into the poll is Owasso (OK) at No. 10. The Rams are undefeated with a 16-0 record. They went 7-0 in a spring break trip to Florida. Leading the offense are Caleb Denny (.451, 4 2B, 3 HR, 23 RBI) and C.D. White (.407, 7 2B, 1 3B, 24 RBI).

Top pitchers include Jake Thompson (4-0, 1.53 ERA, 12 K), Brayden Lloyd (3-0, 2.80 ERA, 16 K) and Athanie Leeviraphan (3-0, 1.91 ERA, 18 K).

No. 11 Brother Rice (Chicago, IL) dropped its first game to Lyons Township 4-3, but came back to defeat Lincoln-Way East, 1-0 and St. Xavier (Louisville, KY), 7-5. They are 2-1. Top player Ryan Kutt is hitting .375 for the first three games and is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA.

No. 12 Lake Central (St. John, IN) starts on March 30.

No. 13 Rancho Bernardo (San Diego, CA) is 8-1. They suffered only one loss to Cathedral Catholic, 4-3 in 10 innings. It was the championship game for the Hilltop Tournament. Rancho Bernardo came back to win its next three games.

Barbe (Lake Charles, LA) slipped to No. 14 after posting a 20-3 record.

No. 15 Horizon (Scottsdale, AZ) has a 16-1-1 record. The Huskies failed to win their own tournament title after suffering a 4-1 loss to Stillwater (OK). However, they did defeat Cherokee Trail (CO) 5-2, Canyon del Oro (Tucson, AZ) 9-5, Carl Albert (OK) 9-5 and Edmond Santa Fe (OK) 7-6. Pitcher Colin King got the win against Cherokee Trail. He gave up four hits, walked one and struck out nine. Catcher Danny Berger is leading the team’s offense with a .460 batting average, 7 doubles, 3 home runs and 22 RBI.

No. 16 Plainfield South (IL) has a 3-1 record to start the season. The pre-season No. 2 team in Illinois suffered a 4-2 loss to Edwardsville in its second game of the season.

Shawnee Mission East (Prairie Village, KS) is No. 17 with a 2-1 record. They lost their season opener to Deer Creek (OK) 2-1, but came back to defeat Edmond Memorial (OK) 9-4 and St. James Academy (KS) 8-4. Zebulon Vermillion has pitched seven innings this season without giving up an earned run while Luck Anderson  has not surrendered any hits over four innings and has struck out 12.

No. 18 St. Joseph Regional (Montvale, NJ) starts April 1.

Moving into the poll at No. 19 is Lake Travis (Austin, TX), 12-1-1. They recently won their 24th straight district game against Westlake (Austin, TX), 14-4.

Also new to the poll at No. 20 is Orange Lutheran (Orange, CA) with an 8-1 record. The Lancers are ranked No. 3 in the state by Cal-Hi Sports. Leading the offense is OF Garrett Mitchell with a .414 batting average, 5 doubles, one triple and 11 RBI.

No. 21 Cullman (AL) is 16-3 and remains the No. 1 team in 6A by the Alabama Sports Writers Association.

New to the poll is Spanish Fort (AL) at No. 22. They are 20-2 and No. 2 in 6A by the ASWA. Leading the offense is 1B Von Seibert (.475, 6 2B, 3 HR), CF Chase White (.410, 7 2B, 1 HR) and C Colt Steiner (.373, 6 2B, 5 HR). Top pitchers are Jaxen Forrester (2-0, 1.40 ERA, 36 K), Garland Horst (3-0, 0.31 ERA, 27 K) and Thomas Johnston (4-0, 0.00 ERA, 12 K).

No. 23 Prosper (TX) joins the poll with a 19-2-1 record and is ranked No. 1 in Texas 5A polls. The team has won seven games in a row and gave Coach Rick Carpenter his 800th coaching victory when they defeated Coppell (TX), 4-3.

No. 24 Lake Brantley (Altamonte Springs, FL) won the first 12 games of the season before suffering its first loss to Spruce Creek (Port Orange, FL), 9-0. The Patriots are ranked No. 3 in Prep Zone’s All-Florida Poll.

Oxford (MS) dropped to No. 25 after posting a 14-2 record. Tyler Smith tossed a no-hitter in an 11-1 victory over Lake Cormorant.

No. 26 Allatoona (Acworth, GA) is 15-2. Most recently LHP Kyle Jacobsen tossed a 3-0 shutout over River Ridge. He gave up 6 hits, no walks and struck out four in seven innings. For the season, he is 5-1 with a 0.27 ERA, 22 strikeouts and 7 walks.

No. 27 Ballard (Louisville, KY) opened its season with a 5-1 record. Top hitters so far are Jackson Millhollan (.643, 5 2B, 3 HR), Jo Adel (.404, 3 HR), James Crockett (.400, 1 2B, 2 HR) and Jordan Gunter (.545, 4 HR).

No. 28 is Stoneman Douglas (Parkland, FL) with a 8-3 record. Douglas most recently suffered a 5-4 loss to Monsignor Pace (FL).

Steinbrenner (Lutz, FL) is No. 29 with a 10-3 record. They recently lost 9-0 to Tampa Jesuit.

No. 30 Walton (Marietta, GA) is 16-3. In a three game series with Cherokee (Canton, GA), Walton won two, 5-0 and 4-1, and lost 4-3.

Several teams fell from the top 30, including American Heritage (FL), Hamilton (AZ), Christian Brothers (TN), Carlsbad (NM), De La Salle (CA), Cherokee Trail (CO), Fort Bend Travis (TX) and Cienega (AZ).

Teams to watch include Pinnacle (Phoenix, AZ), Oak Grove (Hattiesburg, MS), Palmetto (Miami, FL) and Columbus (Miami, FL).
