Collegiate Baseball H.S. Poll 4-24-17


TUCSON, Ariz. — Shawnee (Shawnee, OK) is ranked No. 1 in the latest Collegiate Baseball National High School Poll with a 31-0 record.

The Wolves have posted 43 straight wins dating back to the 2016 season.

Recently Shawnee won three games in the McAlester Shootout to advance to the title game against Collinsville (OK). However, the game was rained out and not rescheduled.

The team is led by C/P Jake Taylor, an Oklahoma State signee who has been outstanding on all fronts. Over the last 7 games, he has posted a .409 batting average (.544 for the season) with four doubles, one home run and 9 RBI. Also during that time frame, he recorded two wins against Carl Albert (OK), 6-5 and Duncan (OK), 10-0. He pitched a combined 12 innings and posted a 2.23 ERA with 10 strikeouts.

Buchanan (Clovis, CA) is No. 2 after losing its first game of the season and posting a 22-1 record. The Bears competed in the National Classic in California and lost an 11-7 game to Sunrise Mountain (Peoria, AZ). They were 3-1 in the tourney, beating California competition Esperanza, 7-3, Oaks Christian, 6-1 and El Dorado, 4-2.

No. 3 Archbishop McCarthy (Southwest Ranches, FL) is 20-2. The Mavericks recently posted wins over powerhouse teams Royal Palm Beach, 9-1, Gulliver Prep, 13-1 and Flanagan, 2-0, but lost its second game of the season to defending state 3A champs Trinity Christian, 5-0.

No. 4 Columbus (Miami, FL) is 23-1 record and finished its regular season with a 16-0 home record. The pitching staff has been this year’s strongest feature with a Team ERA of 0.83 and 13 shutouts for the season. Pitchers have allowed only one team to score 6 runs and have held all other teams to three or less runs per game.

No. 5 Rancho Bernardo (San Diego, CA) has a 20-2 record and is the top team in the San Diego area, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. Bernardo went 3-1 in the recent Lion’s Baseball Tournament Classic Division, losing to Madison (CA), 2-0.

No. 6 North Gwinnett (Suwanee, GA) posted a 28-2 record, which ties the school record for wins in a season. They captured the Regional championship, but still play a couple more games before the state playoffs begin.

No. 7 George Ranch (Richmond, TX) has a 23-3 record but recently dropping two games to Brazoswood (TX), 4-1 and Pearland (TX), 8-3. Those games halted a win streak that dropped the team several spots.

No. 8 Huntington Beach (CA) beat Mira Costa (CA), 9-4 to win the Boras Classic South tournament. The team has a 20-3 record.

Hagan Danner was named MVP. He hit three home runs during the tournament, earned a pitching victory and played great defense at second base. The Oilers will meet Bellarmine Prep, winners of the North bracket, on May 6 for the overall Boras Classic title.

No. 9 Lake Travis (Austin, TX) is 22-3-1 and recently dropped two games which broke a 13-game win streak. They went 2-1 in a series against Vista Ridge (Cedar Park, TX) and split two games with Vandegrift (Austin, TX).

Moving up to No. 10 is St. Joseph Regional (Montvale, NJ) which has started its season 11-0. P/SS Devin Ortiz collected his 100th career hit and tossed a 6-hit shutout over Don Bosco (NJ) for a 1-0 victory.

No. 11 Owasso (OK) posted a 25-2 record and clinched its District Championship. Top hitters continue to be Caleb Denny (.398, 6 2B, 5 HR, 31 RBI) and Connor Beichler (.391, 8 2B, 11 RBI, 11 SB).

Joining the poll at No. 12 is Riverdale Baptist (Upper Marlboro, MD) with a 20-1 record. Riverdale defeated Paul VI (VA), 9-1 in the title game of the Southeastern Baseball Classic in Hartsville, SC. They went through the tournament undefeated.

No. 13 Fort Bend Travis (Richmond, TX) is 22-4. Ryan Rickett and Connor Lee combined to pitch a 7 inning perfect game against Fort Bend Austin, 9-0.

No. 14 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, CA) has a 10-game win streak going for a 17-3 overall record. Among Los Angeles area teams, they are currently ranked third by the LA Times.

No. 15 Winder-Barrow (Winder, GA) has a 27-2 record, winning three-game series from Habersham Central (GA) and Apalachee (GA)  and two games from Lanier.

No. 16 New Hanover (Wilmington, NC) posted a 17-2 record and are the top team in North Carolina’s 4A rankings. Currently they are 8-1 in conference play.

No. 17 Allatoona (Acworth, GA) has a 27-3 record. With a 10-0 victory over South Cobb, Allatoona captured its fourth straight Region championship. Kyle Jacobsen, David Smith and Blake Evans have been providing the offensive power for the past couple of weeks. Each hit over .600 in that time frame.

No. 18 William Penn Charter (Philadelphia, PA) posted a 15-1 record. RHP Joey Lancellotti pitched a gem against Malvern Prep in a 1-0 victory. He scattered five hits, walked one and recorded 12 strikeouts in front of a several MLB scouts. In 26 2/3 innings this season, he has allowed just 13 hits, posted an 0.26 ERA and struck out 51.

Joining the poll at No. 19 is Moody (Corpus Christi, TX) with a 18-0-3 record. Moody is the current top ranked team in Texas 5A baseball. Having gone through District 30-5A South play undefeated 8-0, they will face Calallen (TX) for the district title.

No. 20 is Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, NV) has risen to the No. 1 spot in the Nevada Preps baseball poll with a 19-4 record. The Gaels participated in the San Diego Lions Tournament. They defeated Elk Grove (CA) 5-3, Granite Hills (CA) 5-0 and La Costa Canyon (CA) 4-0 but lost to Torrey Pines (CA) 4-3. Recently they played previously ranked South Hills (CA) and won 7-5.

No. 21 West Monroe (LA) and No. 22 Barbe (Lake Charles, LA) are neck-and-neck in the Louisiana 5A state poll. Monroe has posted a 32-2 record while Barbe is 29-5 as they head into the state playoffs. In an early season meeting, Barbe prevailed 3-1 over Monroe.

No. 23 Oxford (MS) is 24-4 heading into the state playoffs.

No. 24 Orange Lutheran (Orange, CA) has a 15-4 record. After dropping three games to St. John Bosco, the Lancers bounced back beating Gahr (CA) 8-2, El Toro (CA) 6-5 and Santiago (CA) 7-6.

No. 25 Shawnee Mission East (Prairie Village, KS) is 11-2. The pitching staff has posted a 1.37 ERA, led by Luke Anderson with a 0.00 ERA in 17 innings and 33 strikeouts.

Joining the poll is Basha (Chandler, AZ) at No. 26. The Bears have a 23-3-1 record and recently defeated Perry (Gilbert, AZ) twice and Hamilton (Chandler, AZ) twice.

No. 27 Helena (AL) got two wins over Russell County (AL), 5-1 and 6-0 in the first round of the Alabama 6A state playoffs. They are 30-5.

No. 28 Canterbury (Fort Myers, FL) posted a 21-4 record as the top team in Florida’s 3A division.

No. 29 Eastlake (Chula Vista, CA) recently went 2-2 in the San Diego Lions Tournament. One win was against previously ranked Green Valley (Henderson, NV), 13-0. Since then they have posted three wins against local competition. they are 18-3.

No. 30 Cullman (AL) has a 33-7 record and beat McAdory (McCalla, AL), 9-0 and 6-2 in the first round of the state playoffs.

Several teams fell out of the top 30, including South Hills (CA), Green Valley (NV), Lake Brantley (FL), Ballard (KY), Prosper (TX), and Horizon (AZ).

Teams to watch include Massillion Jackson (OH), Reno (NV), Colleyville Heritage (TX), and Harvard-Westlake (CA).
