Collegiate Baseball H.S. Poll 5-8-17

SHAWNEE NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Shawnee (OK) remains No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball’s National High School poll with a perfect 37-0 record.

The Wolves currently have 49 straight wins dating back to last year and advanced to the Oklahoma 5A state tournament.

Five hitters are batting over .450 for the season, including 2B AJ Barron (.456, 11 2B, 5 3B, 36 RBI), OF/P Eli Davis (.496, 16 2B, 5 3B, 7 HR, 34 RBI), C Jake Taylor (.516, 20 2B, 3 3B, 8 HR, 64 RBI), 3B/C Kade Self (.524, 20 2B, 6 3B, 5 HR, 49 RBI) and SS/P Tanner Sparks (.508, 9 2B, 2 3B, 12 HR, 78 RBI).

Sparks also leads the pitching staff with a 9-0 record, 0.95 ERA and 61 strikeouts in 44 1/3 innings.

Huntington Beach (CA) moves up to No. 2 after defeating Bellarmine Prep (CA), 4-1 for the overall state title of the Boras Classic. Hagan Danner took a no hitter into the seventh inning of the championship game. He finished the contest with a three-hitter and retired 17 consecutive batters at one point.

Huntington Beach won five games the past two weeks to improve to 25-3.

No. 3 Archbishop McCarthy (Southwest Ranches, FL) defeated district rival American Heritage, 4-3 in the district championship game. Adan Fernandez drove home the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to clinch the victory. The Mavericks are 24-2 and advance to the regional playoffs where they will face Miami Springs.

No. 4 North Gwinnett (Suwanee, GA) continues to roll in the Georgia 7A state playoffs. Now in the Elite 8, the Region 6-7A champions will face off against Hillgrove. They have a 32-2 record.

No. 5 Rancho Bernardo (San Diego, CA) has a 24-3 record. In Palomar League play, Rancho Bernardo defeated Poway twice and won 2 of 3 games against Westview.

No. 6 is Buchanan (Clovis, CA) with a 23-2 record. The Bears recently split two games with Clovis West (CA), losing 2-1 in the first game and winning 11-8 in the second.

No. 7 Christopher Columbus (Miami, FL) won its district title by defeating Braddock (Miami, FL), 5-0. The Explorers (26-2) advance to the 9A regional playoffs to face Palmetto.

No. 8 Lake Travis (Austin, TX) has a 24-3-1 record and defeated Madison (San Antonio, TX), 11-4 and 7-1 to advance in the state playoffs.

No. 9 George Ranch (Richmond, TX) also advances in the state playoffs after shutting out Clear Brook (Friendswood, TX), 3-0 and 3-0. They are 26-3.

No. 10 Riverdale Baptist (Upper Marlboro, MD) posted a 24-1 record and has won 9 straight. The team has now won 20 or more games for 31 consecutive years.

No. 11 Owasso (OK) won three straight regional tournament games to post a 31-3 overall record. Brayden Lloyd defeated Bixby in the tournament to improve his record to 8-0, 2.25 ERA, 49 strikeouts in 56 innings. Nate Wohlgemuth shut out Stillwater in the regional final and improved his record to 5-1  with a 1.81 ERA, 51 strikeouts in 31 innings. The Rams advance to the opening round of the state tournament.

No. 12 Lamar (Houston, TX) is the top team in the Texas HS Baseball Coaches 6A poll with a 27-2-1 record. They defeated Cypress Falls (Houston, TX), 4-0 and 1-0 in the first round of the state playoffs. In the first game, Jacob Millender gave up no runs on two hits and struck out 10 in 7 innings.

Leading the overall state poll in Florida is No. 13 Calvary Christian (Clearwater, FL) which has a 26-0 record. They will face Trinity Prep (Winter Park, FL) in the 4A state regional.

No. 14 William Penn Charter (Philadelphia, PA) has an 18-1 record led by great pitching and a strong offense. RHP Joey Lancellotti posted 13 strikeouts in a 5-2 win over Springside Chestnut Hill. LHP Brendan Cellucci tossed a one-hitter in a 6-0 win over Haverford School. He recorded 8 strikeouts. Lancellotti belted two homers in the game.

No. 15 Allatoona (Acworth, GA) is 4-0 in the state playoffs and advances to the third round where they will face Johns Creek (GA). They have a 31-3 overall record.

No. 16 Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, NV) will face Arbor View (NV) in the 4A Sunset Regional. The Gaels finished the regular season with a 26-4 record.

No. 17 Moody (Corpus Christi, TX) is the top team in Texas 5A baseball with a 20-1-3 record. They defeated Winn (Eagle Pass, TX) in the Bi-District play, 6-1 and 8-7 to advance in the state playoffs.

No. 18 West Monroe (LA) has five wins in the Louisiana 5A state playoffs and has advanced to the semi-finals to face Zachary (LA). They are 37-2.

No. 19 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, CA) is ranked No. 2 in the recent Los Angeles Times poll with a 22-5 record. They are 10-2 in Trinity League play.

No. 20 New Hanover (Wilmington, NC) has a 19-3 record as they enter the first round of the North Carolina 4A state playoffs. They face Southern Alamance (NC) in the first round.

No. 21 Shawnee Mission East (Prairie Village, KS) won the Sunflower League for the third year in a row. East has a 16-2 record with a 12-game winning streak. The pitching staff has only given up 30 runs total. Luke Anderson finished the regular season without giving up an earned run in 30 innings. He has a 4-1 record, 0.00 ERA, 56 strikeouts and allowed only 13 hits.

No. 22 Helena (AL) is 6-0 after two rounds of the Alabama 6A state tournament. They face Hillcrest in the semi-finals after posting a 34-5 overall record.

New to the poll is Governor Livingston (Berkeley Heights, NJ) which moved to the No. 1 spot in the NJ.com poll after posting 15 straight wins before losing its first contest to Johnson (Clark, NJ), 9-5. The Highlanders are dominating teams, outscoring opponents 140-33 while the pitching staff has tossed six shutouts.

Also new to the poll at No. 24 is La Cueva (Albuquerque, NM) with a 25-1 record. The Bears won its first two games in the state playoffs against Onate, 2-0 and 10-0. They advance to play Rio Rancho.

No. 25 Oxford (MS) is 29-5 and defeated Lewisburg two out of three to advance to the Final 4 in the Mississippi 5A state finals. They will face New Hope.

New to the poll at No. 26 is Cathedral (Indianapolis, IN) which has a 17-0 record as one of the top 4A teams in the state.

No. 27 is Fort Bend Travis (Richmond, TX), the District co-champs in 20-6A after losing to Fort Bend Kempner, 2-0 in the last district game. They defeated Katy Taylor, 13-3 and 5-3 in the Bi-District playoffs to advance in the state playoff tournament. They have a 25-5 record.

No. 28 Eastlake (Chula Vista, CA) is undefeated in league play at 7-0 and has posted a 24-3 overall record. They are ranked second in the San Diego Union-Tribune area rankings.

No. 29 Cullman (AL) posted three shutouts in the first two rounds of the Alabama 6A state playoffs. They defeated McAdory, 9-0 and 6-2 and Walker, 17-0 and 10-0 for a 33-7 overall record. Owen Lovell became the school’s all-time leader in career hits when he hit a double against McAdory. It was his 239th hit of his career.

No. 30 is West Orange (Winter Garden, FL) with a 23-3 record. They face Dr. Phillips (FL) in the Florida 9A Regional quarterfinals.

Teams that fell out of the poll are St. Joseph Regional (NJ), Winder-Barrow (GA), Barbe (LA), Orange Lutheran (CA), Basha (AZ) and Canterbury (FL).

Teams to watch are Jackson (Massillion, OH), Oak Grove (MS), West Lauderdale (MS), Jefferson (WV), Moseley (FL) and Saline (MI).
