Collegiate Baseball H.S. Poll 6-6-16


TUCSON, Ariz. — Buchanan (Clovis, CA) is No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball’s latest National High School Poll with a 30-1 record.

The Bears, which finished the season with 13 straight wins, defeated Clovis North 4-0 to win their second straight CIF Central Section Division 1 championship.

RHP Grant Gambrell fought his way out of three jams during the title game as he went the distance, allowing one run on five hits.

He got into a jam in the third inning after loading the bases with two outs, but Gambrell got the next batter to ground out. In the fifth inning, he gave up two singles on the first two pitches of the game, but he got the next two batters to fly out and ground out, and then struck out the final out. In the seventh inning, he got into another jam with two outs, but induced a ground out to seal the win.

No. 2 Archbishop McCarthy (Southwest Ranches, FL) — 29-2 and Florida 6A champs.

No. 3 Stoneman Douglas (Parkland, FL) — 27-2 and Florida 9A champs.

No. 4 Greenup County (Greenup, KY) defeated Ashland Blazer, 9-1 for the regional title and moves on to the state competition. The Musketeers have won their last six games by a combined score of 55-11 and had a 33 game win streak to start the season before losing their only game so far. They are 39-1.

No. 5 Redondo Union (Redondo Beach, CA) defeated Woodbridge (Irvine, CA) 2-1 to capture the CIF Southern Section Division 3 title and completed its season with a 31-2 record. Redondo sailed through the sectional tournament winning five straight games.

No. 6 Bryant, AR — 31-2 and Arkansas 7A champs.

No. 7 Walton (Marietta, GA) — 32-4 and Georgia 6A champs.

No. 8 Canterbury School (Fort Myers, FL) — 31-1 and Florida’s 3A champs.

No. 9 North Davidson (Lexington, NC) bumped No. 17 Providence (Charlotte, NC) out of the tournament with a 5-1 win, and then went on to defeat Green Hope (Cary, NC) twice, 6-0 and 5-2, to win the 4A state title. They finished 30-2.

No. 10 Barbe (Lake Charles, LA) — 35-6 and Louisiana 5A champs.

No. 11 Riverdale Baptist (Marlboro, MD) won the Maryland Private School state title with a 6-5 victory over DeMatha. Jose Rivera belted a three-run walk off homer to win the game. It was the second straight state title. Riverdale finished the season 35-3 and has won 46 of its last 49 games dating back to last year.

New to the poll at No. 12 is De La Salle (Concord, CA) which defeated Castro Valley, CA 7-3 for the CIF North Central Division 1 Section title. They were 14-0 in league play this season and finished with a 25-3 record.

No. 13 Deer Park, TX was knocked out of the state tournament after suffering two losses to Langham Creek (Houston, TX) in the regional final. Deer Park won the first game of the series 9-0 and lost the next two, 4-0 and 3-2. They finished 37-3.

No. 14 Coppell, TX was knocked out of the state tournament by Midland Lee (Midland, TX) in the regional semi-finals. The Cowboys lost the first game 7-2, won the second 14-5 and lost the final games 6-4 to finish 33-4 for the season.

No. 15 Calallen (Corpus Christi, TX) was knocked out of the state tournament by Alamo Heights (San Antonio, TX), losing 2-1 and 6-3. They finished 27-4.

No. 16 Providence (Charlotte, NC) lost to No. 12 North Davidson, 5-1 to finish 29-4.

No. 17 Rockledge, FL — 28-2 and lost in the Region semi-finals.

New to the poll at No. 18 is Basic (Henderson, NV). The Wolves defeated Centennial, 9-1 to claim their first state title in 29 years. They started the game with five first inning runs. It was highlighted by Jack Wold who belted the first pitch he saw over the right field fence for a three-run homer. RHP Trever Berg went the distance, allowing an unearned run on seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks for the win. They finished the season, 36-4.

Returning to the poll is Shawnee Mission East, KS at No. 19 after defeating Lawrence Free State, 4-3 for the Kansas 6A title. The winning run of the game was scored by Philip Cole, a pinch runner, who scored on an errant throw. Joey Wentz helped the team get to the finals by tossing a two-hitter in an 11-0 win over Washburn Rural. He struck out nine and belted a two-run homer in the game.

Entering the poll at No. 20 is Prestonwood Christian Academy (Plano, TX). They won their first ever TAPPS 5A baseball state title after defeating Monsignor Kelley Catholic (Beaumont, TX) 7-1. To get to the title game, Prestonwood beat St. Thomas Catholic, 5-4. The title win completed an unprecedented athletic year for Prestonwood which claimed the TAPPS 5A “Triple Crown” — championship titles in football, basketball and baseball.

No. 21 St. Joseph Regional (Montevale, NJ) will face Seton Hall Prep for the NJSIAA Non-Public A state championship. St. Joseph advanced to the title game with an 8-5 win over Delbarton. Matthew Alaimo belted a two-run homer in the fifth inning. They are 25-3 for the season.

No. 22 Teurlings Catholic (Lafayette, LA) — 35-4 and Louisiana 4A state champs.

No. 23 Hamilton (Chandler, AZ) — 27-7 and Arizona Division 1 champs.

No. 24 Glenwood School (Phenix City, AL) — 46-5 and AISA champs.

No. 25 Summerville, SC — 27-7 and South Carolina 4A state champs.

No. 26 Murrieta Mesa (Murrieta, CA) defeated Harvard-Westlake, 3-2 in 10 innings to claim the CIF Southern Section Division 1 title.

No. 28 Brother Rice (Chicago, IL) lost to St. Laurence, 4-3 in the Section Finals and finished its season 35-4.

No. 28 St. Thomas Catholic (Houston, TX) was knocked out of the playoffs by eventual winner Prestonwood Christian. They finished 30-2-1.

No. 29 JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano, CA) was knocked out of the tournament by Harvard-Westlake and completed its season 27-7.

No. 30 South Caldwell (Hudson, NC) — 28-2 and eliminated from the state tournament.

Dropping out of the poll are Milford, OH, Farragut, TN, Buford, GA, South Dade, FL and Lake Travis, TX.
