Collegiate Baseball HS Poll (3-10-20)

JESUIT NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Jesuit (Tampa, FL) is No. 1 for the third straight Collegiate Baseball National High School Poll as presented by Diamond Pro® with a 7-0 record.

The Tigers have been the top team in the USA since the pre-season poll. The most recent win was a 12-1 rout of Calvary Christian (Fort Lauderdale, FL) who was ranked in several other national polls.

In 7 games, the Tigers have posted a .365 team batting average and a 1.92 team ERA. Four hitters are batting over .400 in Jalen Niles (.467), Nick Rodriguez (.450), Bradke Lohry (.429) and Henry Politz (.429).

Leading the pitching staff is Camden Minacci who is 3-0 with a 0.64 ERA, 23 strikeouts and 2 walks in 11 innings. Justin Clark is 2-0 with an 0.00 ERA, 10 strikeouts and no walks in 4 innings.

No. 2 is De La Salle (Concord, CA). The Spartans won the first two games of the season against Bellarmine College Prep (San Jose), 4-3 and Elk Grove (CA) 5-3. This extends its win streak from last season to 30 games. They are the No. 1 team in the California state poll conducted by Cal-Hi Sports.

No. 3 Orange Lutheran (Orange, CA) is 6-0 and the No. 1 in the Los Angeles Times baseball rankings. Of the six games, four were shutouts. They have two wins over top California teams in La Mirada, 2-0 and Valley Christian, 8-2.

No. 4 American Heritage (Delray Beach, FL) rolled to 9-0, posting four shutouts. The team has a .323 batting average and 0.25 team ERA. LHP Nelson Berkwich leads the pitching staff with a 3-0 record, 0.00 ERA, 31 strikeouts and 4 walks in 16.2 innings.

No. 5 Farragut (Knoxville, TN) starts this week.

No. 6 American Heritage (Plantation, FL) is 7-0 to start the season. They boast key wins over top Florida teams in Westminster Christian (Miami) 2-0, Venice 4-3 and Florida Christian 3-2.

No. 7 Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks, CA) posted a 4-1 record. They opened the Mission League schedule going 2-1 against Crespi (Encino, CA), winning 13-2 (8 innings), 10-5 and losing 11-5.

No. 8 Carroll (Southlake, TX) is 11-1. The team dropped a one-run game to Pebble Hills (El Paso, TX) early in the season, but has since gone on a 10-game win streak with recent wins over Cy Fair Bridgeland (TX), 15-7, Eastlake (TX), 2-0 and Wylie (TX), 4-0.

No. 9 Hamilton (Chandler, AZ) is proving once again that the Huskies are the team to beat in Arizona 6A baseball as they kicked off the season with 7 straight wins. They have already defeated several top teams in Red Mountain, 10-3, O’Connor, 4-1 and Mesa Mountain View, 9-8. Next they will compete in the Boras Classic-Arizona tournament.

New to the poll is No. 10 Veterans Memorial (Corpus Christi, TX) with a 12-0 record and ranked No. 1 in Texas 5A by the Texas High School Baseball website. The Eagles won the Mira’s Baseball Classic by plowing through six different opponents, outscoring them 34-6. In the championship game, they defeated King (TX), 11-1 in a run-rule shortened game.

No. 11 Thousand Oaks (CA) started the season off with an 8-0 record and a recent No. 2 ranking by the Los Angeles Times poll. They have outscored opponents 52-13 and have four more games to hone their skills before facing the tough competition in the National High School Invitational in Cary, N.C.

No. 12 JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano, CA) posted a 9-1 record with the most recent game against Birmingham (Lake Balboa, CA) as the lone loss, 2-1. They boast three wins over No. 22 Huntington Beach (CA), 3-2, 6-1 and 3-1. Pitcher Gage Jump has not allowed a run on 2 hits so far in 15.1 innings of work. He has walked 10 and struck out 27.

New to the poll at No. 13 is Owasso (OK) with a 4-0 record to start the season. The Rams took two games from Jenks (OK), 7-3 and 2-0. Nate Wohgemuth struck out 10 Jenks batters in 4 innings of work. Nate Ackenhausen tossed a complete game one-hitter vs. Jenks and struck out 16.

No. 14 Barbe (Lake Charles, LA) has an 8-2 record. Leading the pitching staff are Brody Drost (2-0, 0.00 ERA, 14 K) and Adam Guth (2-0, 0.62 ERA, 19 K). Top hitters include Ethan Medlin (.457, 4 2B, 1 HR, 8 RBI), Davis Meche (.419, 2 HR, 3 2B, 1 3B, 10 RBI) and Bailey Juneau (.407, 1 3B, 8 RBI).

No. 15 DeSoto Central (Southaven, MS) has posted a 10-1 record with wins over teams from Florida, Georgia, Alabama and only one Mississippi team. DeSoto won the White Bracket of the Perfect Game Showdown. The pitching staff has been outstanding led by Cade Smith (2-0, 0.00 ERA, 4 BB, 28 K, 16.1 IP) and Gavin Brassfield (2-0, 0.00 ERA, 5 BB, 17 K, 13.1 IP).

No. 16 Reagan (San Antonio, TX) has a No. 2 ranking in the Texas 6A division by the Texas High School Baseball website with a 9-2-2 record. The team tied games with Katy (TX) 2-2 and The Woodlands (TX) 4-4, both in 8 innings. Among their wins are four shutouts.

No. 17 Lake Travis (Austin, TX) is 11-1-1 with recent wins over The Woodlands (TX), 3-1 and Round Rock (TX), 2-0.

No. 18 St. Mary’s (Orchard Lake, MI) begins on March 25.

No. 19 Spruce Creek (Port Orange, FL) started the season 8-0, including 5 wins in district play. The team has not allowed more than 3 runs by opponents, outscoring them 53-10.

No. 20 Ayala (Chino Hills, CA) is now No. 3 in the most recent Los Angeles Times rankings with a 10-0 record. They got a key 6-3 victory over early ranked La Mirada (CA) recently.

No. 21 St. Augustine Prep (Richland, NJ) starts March 13.

No. 22 Huntington Beach (CA) dropped in the poll after posting a 5-3 record. After beating Loyola, 7-0 and Harvard-Westlake, 14-6, they lost to JSerra in extra innings 3-2 in a local tournament championship game. Then they subsequently lost a doubleheader to JSerra, 6-1 and 3-1. Jake Vogel has been leading the offense, hitting .458 with 2 home runs, 3 triples and 11 RBI in 8 games.

No. 23 North Gwinnett (Suwanee, GA) is 7-3. A recent trip to California resulted in the team losing to Valley Christian (San Jose, CA), 5-2, St. John Bosco (Bellflower, CA) 4-1 and beating Mater Dei (Santa Ana, CA), 5-4. They returned to play a doubleheader against Duluth (GA), winning 12-0 and 10-0.

No. 24 Harvard-Westlake (Studio City, CA) is 6-1-1. Recently the Wolverines swept Mission League rival Loyola (CA), 13-5, 7-2 and 15-6. They dropped a tournament game to Huntington Beach (CA), 14-6 and tied ML King (CA), 6-6.

No. 25 Jesuit (Portland, OR) begins on March 25.

No. 26 Parkview (Lilburn, GA) posted a 10-2 record. Parkview defeated Blessed Trinity (GA), 8-0 in the Georgia Peach Tournament. Mason Brown and Jordan Lowery combined for a no-hitter. Brown had 7 strikeouts in 6 innings of work. The Panthers had three shutouts in the tournament. In a second local tourney, Parkview lost to Archbishop McCarthy (FL), 3-2 in 9 innings, but won three other games. Panther pitchers have thrown 8 shutouts and only given up 7 runs in 12 games.

No. 27 Har-Ber (Springdale, AR) kicked off the season with a 4-1 record. Hunter Wood is batting .600 with 2 doubles and 8 RBI and picked up a save against Mountain Home. Sam Stephenson batted .400 with 3 doubles.

No. 28 Millard West (Omaha, NE) starts March 21.

No. 29 St. John Vianney (St. Louis, MO) begins March 21.

No. 30 Loganville (GA) posted an 8-3 record but has won its last 6 games. In the Perfect Game Showdown Red Bracket, Loganville went 4-0, beating IMG Academy, 13-1 in the title game. The team has been without the services of its No. 1 pitcher all season.

Dropped from the poll are The Woodlands (TX) 9-1-2; Bob Jones (Madison, AL) 12-4; Sam Houston (Lake Charles, LA) 4-3; Kingwood (TX) 8-4; La Mirada (CA) 6-2; Venice (FL) 4-3; Valley Christian (San Jose, CA) 3-2; and Mountain Point (Phoenix, AZ) 1-2.

Teams to watch include Mitchell (FL) 6-0, Baylor (TN) 0-0; Regis Jesuit (CO) 0-0, and AC Flora (SC) 4-0.
