SAM HOUSTON H.S. NO. 1 IN CB’s NATIONAL POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Sam Houston (Lake Charles, LA) is No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball’s National High School Poll presented by Diamond Pro with a 15-0 record.

The Broncos are hitting .388 as a team with a 1.06 ERA and have stolen 67 bases in 70 attempts while holding opponents to only 4.

Catcher Silas Ardoin, who has signed to play at the University of Texas, has shut down opposing running games. Besides only allowing 4 stolen bases in 15 games, he has back picked runners at first base five times for outs.

Sam Houston, which has 13 seniors on the team, has 8 players who have committed to colleges, including 6 NCAA Division I schools.

The school record for wins in a row at Sam Houston is 21 which was set last season as the Broncos rolled to 33 wins which was a school record.

Sam Houston captured one state title in baseball during the 2001 season.

The pitching staff is led by RHP/1B Cameron Meeks (93 mph FB, 1-0, 0.00 ERA, 13 strikeouts, 3 walks in 13 IP), RHP Kyle Bartley (0.89 ERA, 23 strikeouts, 7 walks in 15 2/3 IP), and LHP Will Thompson (22 strikeouts, 4 walks in 16 IP).

In recent action, Meeks threw a complete 7-inning shutout against Live Oak to win 3-0. Thompson struck out 11 in a shutout win over Sacred Heart. Bartley threw a two-hitter against Archbishop Shaw, striking out nine. Alex Norris threw a one-hitter in the season opener against Westlake to win, 12-0.

Offensively, Meeks is hitting .476 with 2 homers, 8 doubles, 2 triples, 20 RBI and 7 stolen bases. CF Braden Duhon (committed to Louisiana Tech.) is hitting .449 with 10 RBI and 14 stolen bases. 2B Austin Norris is hitting.400 with 10 RBI and one home run. RF Brandon Goodeaux is hitting .450 with 10 RBI and 8 stolen bases.

No. 2 Lake Travis (Austin, TX) kicked off the season with a 14-0 record, 3-0 in district play, putting Coach Mike Rogers just one win away from 700 career wins. The offense is led by 3B Brett Baty who is hitting .599 with 6 home runs and 19 RBI. Top pitcher is Jimmy Lewis (3-0, 0.36 ERA, 27 K, 19 IP).

No. 3 Argyle (Argyle, TX) saw its 50-game undefeated streak snapped with a loss to Carroll (Southlake, TX), 11-1. The Eagles (14-1-1) were 37-0 in 2018 and went through the first 13 games this season with just one 4-4 tie against Ray (Corpus Christi, TX) on February 22.

Despite the loss, they came back the next day to defeat Coppell (TX), 12-9 and Rockwall (TX), 10-0.

No. 4 Calvary Christian (Clearwater, FL) started its season with 4 wins. Nolan Hudi struck out 7 to defeat Tampa Catholic, 6-1.

No. 5 George County (Lucedale, MS) is 9-0 and has outscored opponents, 69-16. In a 12-0 win over Meridian (MS), Logan Tanner went 2-for-2 with a home runs and 5 RBI.

No. 6 Mountain Vista (Highlands Ranch, CO) posted two wins to start the season. Sam Ireland had a 4 RBI day in a 14-2 win over Arapahoe (CO).

No. 7 Colleyville Heritage (Colleyville, TX) is 13-1. They lost 4-1 against Oak Ridge (TX) after winning the first 8 games of the season.

They have outscored opponents, 105-31. In a 22-12 win over Chapin (El Paso, TX), Mason Greer went 6-for-6 with 3 doubles and 8 RBI while Bobby Witt Jr. was 5-for-5 with 2 doubles, 2 triples, 6 RBI and 6 runs scored.

No. 8 Harvard-Westlake (Studio City, CA) kicked off the season with a 9-1 record. The first five wins were in the Easton Tournament where they defeated California schools — Burbank (5-0), Oaks Christian (3-1), Thousand Oaks (4-3), Birmingham (10-0) and Notre Dame (7-1).

No. 9 Vestavia Hills, AL began its season with 11 straight wins. Two of the Rebels’ wins were against JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano, CA), 5-4 (8 innings) and 3-1.

No. 10 Saint Xavier (Louisville, KY) will start on March 19.

No. 11 Cypress, CA kicked off its season with a 10-1 record. They dropped a 2-0 game to St. John Bosco (CA), but have quality wins over La Mirada 3-1, El Toro 12-1, Ayala 2-1 and Orange Lutheran 2-1.

No. 12 American Heritage (Plantation, FL) is 4-1. The one loss is against Doral Academy, 3-1 in the St. Thomas Invitational Tournament championship game.

No. 13 Owasso, OK started the season 5-1. In a 6-3 win over Bartlesville, David Sandlin allowed 5 hits, but no earned runs, walked two and struck out six in 7 innings. DH Matt Turpen went 2-for-4 in a 10-5 win over Edmond Santa Fe. He hit a home run, a triple, 3 RBI and scored 2 runs.

No. 14 Cypress Ranch (Cypress, TX) is 13-2. In a 4-0 win over Langham Creek (Houston, TX), Matt Thompson struck out 9 and hit a home run in the game. Fabian Mayfield has been on fire, hitting a grand slam in a win over Pearland and a home run in a win over Dickinson.

No. 15 Har-Ber (Springdale, AR) has a 6-2 record. In a 3-0 victory over Harrison (AR), RHP Blake Adams struck out 7 and allowed no hits in 3 innings to get his second win of the season.

He is 2-0 with 17 strikeouts, 3 walks in 6 innings pitched. Hunter Wood has a 9-game hitting streak dating back to last year’s state championship. He is hitting.444 with 4 doubles, 1 home run, 9 RBI and 9 runs scored.

No. 16 Farragut (Knoxville, TN) defeated West, 13-3, in the season opener. Ryan Hagenow struck out 11 for the win. The Admirals tallied 14 hits in the game with 4 players recording 2 each.

No. 17 Parkview (Lilburn, GA) began with a 10-2 record and is the top team in Georgia’s 7A division. They lost to Blessed Trinity, 6-2 and Buford, 9-4.

No. 18 Orange Lutheran (Orange, CA) started 4-2 which included 2 wins over Carroll (Southlake, TX) and Valley Christian (CA).

No. 19 Valley Christian (San Jose, CA) is 5-2 after winning the Mike Hazlett Tournament by defeating Wilcox (Santa Clara, CA), 10-1.

No. 20 St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, FL) kicked off the season with a 4-1 record, 2-0 in district games.

No. 21 Yucaipa, CA started its season 6-2 and is 1-1 in league play.

No. 22 Hamilton (Chandler, AZ) is 7-2 with quality wins over Sandra Day O’Connor 11-5, Desert Ridge 11-1 and Pinnacle 15-5. In a 2-1 win over Tolleson, Dustin Bermudez tossed a complete game, one-hitter.

No. 23 Barbe (Lake Charles, LA) is 10-2. The Buccaneers have outscored opponents, 80-23.

No. 24 St. Laurence (Burbank, IL) starts March 18.

No. 25 La Cueva (Albuquerque, NM) kicked off the season with 4 wins. The first game of the season against Cibola went 8 innings for a 6-5 victory. In a 2-0 shutout over Manzano, Ben Schoneman struck out 10.

No. 26 The Woodlands, TX is 11-3 and is ranked third in the Texas 6A poll. The Highlanders have recent wins over Texas teams — Vista Ridge 6-1, McNeil 4-3, Round Rock 19-7 and College Park 13-0.

No. 27 Loganville, GA is 7-3 with games against quality opponents. They were named co-champions in their bracket of the Perfect Game Showdown with Buford, GA. Earlier they defeated Blessed Trinity, GA, 11-9.

No. 28 Delbarton School (Morristown, NJ) will start in April.

No. 29 Palo Verde (Las Vegas, NV) will start March 12 and is the pre-season No. 1 team by Nevada Preps.

No. 30 Blessed Trinity (Roswell, GA) kicked off its season 11-3. They are currently the No. 1 team in Georgia’s 4A division. They defeated Parkview, 6-2, who is in a higher division.

In the Perfect Game High School Showdown, they lost the title game to IMG Academy, 5-0. Leading the pitching staff is LHP Eric Moore who has 4 wins that include victories against Walton, Parkview and North Broward Prep.

Teams that fell out of the pre-season poll include Monsignor Pace (Miami, FL) 2-2, Bishop England (Charleston, SC) 3-3, Marantha (Pasadena, CA) 3-3, La Mirada, CA 7-3 and Bob Jones (Madison, AL) 9-3.

Teams to watch include Nogales, AZ 7-0, Malvern Prep (Malvern, PA) 0-0 and Archbishop Spaudling (Severn, MD) 0-0.
