Collegiate Baseball HS Poll 3-12-18


TUCSON, Ariz. — American Heritage (Plantation, FL) kicked off its season with 9 straight wins and is No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball’s National High School Poll.

The Patriots were named the top team in the nation in Collegiate Baseball’s 2018 Pre-Season Poll.

Of the nine wins, six have been by shutouts as American Heritage has outscored opponents, 93-5.

As a team they are hitting .441 with 15 doubles and 13 home runs. The pitching staff has a microscopic 0.81 team ERA while defensively the Patriots have committed just one error in 9 games.

Leading the offense are INF Gio Ferraro, C Julio Cortez and INF Triston Casas, who have hit 3 home runs and a double each.

No. 2 is Lake Travis (Austin, TX) after posting a 13-0 record to start the season. They captured the No. 1 spot in the current Texas 6A state rankings.

The Cavaliers’ offense has been hot, recording 35 extra-base hits and 47 stolen bases. Top hitters include 3B Brett Baty (.464), CF Carlos Contreras (.419, 17 RBI) and OF Dylan Weiss (.395, 10 RBI). Top pitchers include Blake Helton (3-0, 0.00 ERA) and Jimmy Lewis (2-0, 17 K).

No. 3 El Toro (Lake Forest, CA) started the season with a 7-0 record and are currently the No. 1 team in the Los Angeles Times poll.

A key component to their early success has been UT Erik Tolman, who is 2-0 with 24 strikeouts, one walk, no earned runs in 13 innings. As a hitter, he has 5 doubles, one home runs, 6 RBI and scored 6 runs.

No. 4 Calvary Christian (Clearwater, FL) started the season with 9 consecutive wins and now have a 39-game win streak dating back to last season as they went undefeated in 2017. Their most recent win was a 10-0 shutout against Tampa Prep (FL).

No. 5 is Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks, CA) which began the season with a 5-0 record and are champions of the Easton Tournament.

No. 6 Pleasure Ridge Park (Louisville, KY) will start its season March 23.

No. 7 Valley Christian (San Jose, CA) started its season with a 6-0-1 record. They met rival No. 21 Elk Grove for a game that ended in a tie after 10 innings. Patrick Wicklander tossed 8 no-hit innings of that game and recorded 12 strikeouts.

After posting the best start in school history, Oak Mountain (Birmingham, AL) moves in at No. 8 with a 14-0 record. The Eagles have victories over Hoover (defending 7A Alabama champs) and Pope (defending 6A Georgia champs). Of the 91 innings played, the Eagles have trailed in only two.

In the March 3 victory over Northview, head coach Derek Irons achieved his 350th career win.

Junior 3B Landon Cato hit three straight home runs. In his final at-bat against Clay-Chalkville, he homered. In the next game against James Clemens, he belted two home runs in his first two at-bats.

No. 9 Cathedral Catholic (San Diego, CA) started the season with a 2-1 record. Their only loss was against Rancho Bernardo, 3-1.

No. 10 Farragut (Knoxville, TN) is has not started its season yet.

No. 11 is Blessed Trinity (Roswell, GA). The Titans are 12-1 with their only loss against St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, FL), 8-2 in the Georgia Peach Invitational. They have quality wins over Walton, Cartersville, Lambert, Loganville, Buford and Parkview, all top Georgia teams.

No. 12 Cypress Ranch (Houston, TX) is 12-2-2. They went eight innings against Corpus Christi Carroll and Katy, tying both games and dropped two games in tournaments.

No. 13 Riverdale Baptist (Upper Marlboro, MD) kicked off its season with a 2-0 record. The wins put them as top team in the March Classic Tournament. Noah Marshall and Jordan Peyton combined for 8 strikeouts in the 5-1 win over Gonzaga in the title game.

No. 14 Owasso, OK is 4-0 to start the season. P Nate Wohlgemuth has recorded two wins while 1B/P C.D. White has two saves and leads the team in hitting.

Harvard-Westlake (Studio City, CA) moved up from the pre-season poll to No. 15 after posting a 4-1 record. Loren Franck leads the offense with 3 home runs in 5 games while P Sam Hliboki is 2-0 with 21 strikeouts in 11 innings.

New to the poll at No. 16 is Mountain View (Mesa, AZ) with a 9-1 record. The Toros’ only loss is to Hamilton (Chandler, AZ) in a 6-5 contest that went 9 innings, but they have beat several other top Phoenix-area teams in Mesquite, Red Mountain, Chandler and Gilbert.

No. 17 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, CA) has not played yet.

No. 18 St. John Vianney (St. Louis, MO) also will start soon.

No. 19 Providence (Charlotte, NC) has a 3-1 record and has faced four NCAA Div. I committed ace pitchers from all four teams. They defeated Ardrey Kell, 4-2, Hough, 4-3 and East Forsyth, 4-1.

The only loss was against East Mecklenburg and potential draft pick LHP Luke Little in a 5-4 contest. The Providence pitching staff has only given up 2 earned runs in 4 games.

The Bolles School (Jacksonville, FL) is No. 20 after going 7-3 to start the season. They defeated Stoneman Douglas, 8-7 for the Tournament of Champions title.

No. 21 Elk Grove, CA started its season 2-0-1. The Herd defeated Acalanes, 7-1 and Buchanan, 13-1 after tying Valley Christian in their season-opener.

No. 22 Boston College H.S. (Boston, MA) is slated to being April 2.

Moving in at No. 23 is Calvary Christian Academy (Fort Lauderdale, FL) with a 7-1 record. They won the Flanagan Challenge after beating Florida schools Monsignor Pace, 6-3, North Broward Prep, 9-3 and Flanagan, 6-3.

No. 24 Gulfport, MS kicked off the season with 10 straight wins, including two against Daphne, AL, 6-2 and 8-3.

No. 25 Kokomo, IN will begin on April 3.

No. 26 Parkview (Lilburn, GA) is 10-3 to start the season. The current No. 1 team in Georgia’s 7A division, they won the Georgia Peach Tournament, but got knocked out in the semi-finals in the Perfect Game Showdown by Blessed Trinity,4-2.

No. 27 Malvern Prep (Malvern, PA) will start its season soon.

No. 28 Southlake Carroll, TX is11-3 and ranked in the state polls. They have quality wins over Colleyville Heritage, 4-1 and Rockwall, 3-2.

No. 29 Jackson (Massillon, OH) will start its season soon.

In its season opener, No. 30 Basic (Henderson, NV) defeated Eldorado (Las Vegas, NV), 19-0. 3B/P Jesse Fonteboa led the offense going 4-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs. The Wolves are headed to Phoenix to participate in the Boras Classic-Arizona. They are scheduled to meet No. 16 Mesa Mountain View in the first game.

Teams that fell out of the poll include: Orange Lutheran, CA (1-2); Rockwall-Heath, TX (12-5-1); Loganville, GA (6-4); AC Flora, SC (2-3); Hamilton, AZ (6-3-1); Hoover, AL (7-2); Hattiesburg, MS (8-2); and La Cueva, NM (5-2).

Teams to Watch include San Antonio Reagan, TX (14-3); Cleburne, TX (12-1-2); Glenwood, AL (16-1); Sulphur, LA (13-2); Bishop England, SC (5-0); and Eastlake, CA (2-0-1).
