Collegiate Baseball HS Poll 3-13-17


TUCSON, Ariz. — Archbishop McCarthy (Southwest Ranches, FL) is ranked No. 1 in the first regular-season National High School Poll compiled by Collegiate Baseball.

The Mavericks, off to a 7-0 start after being ranked No. 1 in the Collegiate Baseball pre-season national poll last January, have shutout five of the seven teams they have played this season. The pitching staff has a 0.30 ERA with 42 strikeouts and only 3 walks.

Pitchers Daniel Federman, Joe Perez, Yordani Carmona, Jose Martinez, Johnny Leone, Parker Foss, Mark Diaz and Michael Machin combined for five consecutive shutouts during the last three weeks.

The Mavericks have outscored opponents 78-10 and sport a .414 team batting average. The closest game was a 1-0 pitcher’s duel that went extra innings against Miami Westminster Christian.

Equally dominant has been No. 2 Buchanan (Clovis, CA) with a 10-0 record to start the season. Recently the Bears won three straight games in the Central California Showcase — 6-0 vs. Beyer (Modesto, CA), 17-1 vs. San Luis Obispo (CA) and 2-0 vs. Franklin (Elk Grove, CA).

No. 3 South Hills (West Covina, CA) is 5-0 and won the Frozen Ropes Classic Tournament after defeating Charter Oak (Covina, CA), 13-3. RHP Brandon Dieter has a 2-0 record with an 0.00 ERA and 12 strikeouts. Top hitters include OF/1B Karlos Morales (.533) and SS Jacob Amaya (.438). Dieter and Morales were named co-MVPs of the tournament.

No. 4 Barbe (Lake Charles, LA) has an 11-1 record, suffering only a 5-4 loss to Airline (Bossier City, LA). Seven of the 12 games have been won by shutout. The Buccaneers have outscored opponents, 100-13.

No. 5 Huntington Beach (CA) started the season with a 4-0 record that included a 7-2 win over highly touted Orange Lutheran and a doubleheader sweep (6-4, 4-3) over JSerra Catholic. UT Hagan Danner is hitting .700 with 3 home runs and 9 RBI. He is 2-0 on the mound with a 1.4 ERA in 10 innings.

No. 6 Shawnee (OK) started the season with a 7-0 record and hopes to repeat for the third time as 5A Oklahoma state champions.

Pitchers Eli Davis (2-0, 0.00 ERA, 28 K) and Tanner Sparks (3-0, 1.70 ERA, 25 K) are leading the pitching staff. Sparks also is a top hitter, batting .542 with 2 home runs, a double and 15 RBI. Jake Taylor and Kade Self are both hitting .500 with a home run apiece.

No. 7 Rancho Bernardo (San Diego, CA) posted a 3-0 record to start the season. They are dominating local schools — Granite Hills, 2-1, Hilltop, 8-1 and Bonita Vista, 3-0.

Stoneman Douglas (Parkland, FL) is No. 8 with a 5-0 record. The pitching staff has been dominate with an 0.80 Team ERA.

LHP Brandon Kaminer is 3-0 with an 0.39 ERA, 30 strikeouts, 7 walks in 18 innings. RHP Kyle Yeoward has 3 saves and an 0.00 ERA.

No. 9 Malvern Prep (Malvern, PA) will start March 24.

George Ranch (Richmond, TX) joins the poll at No. 10 with a 15-1 record. The team is ranked No. 1 in the 6A Texas poll by Texas HS Baseball. The only loss has been against Stratford (Houston, TX), 3-1.

No. 11 Brother Rice (Chicago, IL) will start March 16.

No. 12 Lake Central (St. John, IN) starts March 28.

Also new to the poll at No. 13 is Horizon (Scottsdale, AZ) which is 9-0-1 and at the top of the state rankings by the Arizona Republic. In the first game of its tournament, Horizon tied 12-12 with Mountain Ridge (Glendale, AZ). They will play No. 28 Cherokee Trail next.

No. 14 North Gwinnett (Suwanee, GA) joins the poll after a 12-0 start. The Bulldogs won four straight games against Louisiana competition in a New Orleans’ tournament. They defeated Fountainebleau, 11-0, St. Paul’s, 15-0, Brother Martin, 4-2 and Jesuit, 9-5. The Bulldogs have had two extra inning games against North Hall (Gainesville, GA) 1-0, 9 innings and Johns Creek (GA), 1-0, 8 innings.

No. 15 Oxford (MS) also joins the poll with a 7-1 start. Their only loss has been against Mooreville (MS), 3-2. Oxford recently defeated two Arkansas teams in Cabot, 10-0 and Central, 7-0.

No. 16 Plainfield South (IL) starts March 16.

No. 17 Shawnee Mission East (Prairie Village, KS) starts March 17.

No. 18 St. Joseph Regional (Montvale, NJ) starts April 1.

American Heritage (Plantation, FL) slipped to No. 19 after opening with a 5-2 record. They dropped games against Miami Westminster Christian, 10-4 and Calvary Christian Academy, 2-0.

No. 20 Hamilton (Chandler, AZ) opened its season with a 7-2 record, losing to Horizon, 3-2 and Pinnacle, 7-3. Between the two losses, the Huskies won 7 straight games against area competition.

No. 21 Cullman (AL) started its season with an 11-3 record. After two early losses, Cullman had a 10-game win streak before losing 7-0 to Blessed Trinity (Roswell, GA).

No. 22 Steinbrenner (Lutz, FL) opened with a 6-2 record. After dropping two games to Plant (Tampa, FL) 6-1 and Hillsborough (Tampa, FL) 4-3, they have bounced back with a 16-2 win over East Bay (FL).

No. 23 Christian Brothers (Memphis, TN) starts March 13.

Walton (Marietta, GA) dropped to No. 24 from the pre-season poll. They opened with an 11-2 record and are currently riding a 7-game win streak.

No. 25 Carlsbad (NM) started with an 8-2 record, losing to Piedra Vista (Farmington, NM) and Cleveland (Rio Rancho, NM). However, Carlsbad beat both teams in return engagements.

Cienega (Tucson, AZ) is new to the poll at No. 26 with 8 straight wins. The team has posted a .422 batting average and a 2.80 Team ERA. Leading the pitching staff is Ryon Craig (2-0 with a 1.91 ERA, 9 strikeouts, no walks in 11 innings).

No. 27 De La Salle (Concord, CA) started the season at 4-0 record. The Spartans were scheduled to meet California powerhouses in JSerra Catholic, Mater Dei and Orange Lutheran.

No. 28 Cherokee Trail (Aurora, CO) starts March 13.

No. 29 Ballard (Louisville, KY) starts March 14.

No. 30 Fort Bend Travis (Richmond, TX) kicked off its season with an 11-3 record despite several games being rained out. Coach Rodney Hernandez celebrated the 200th win of his career. Wes Faison leads the team with a .563 batting average, two home runs and 16 RBI.

Dropped from the pre-season poll are Dallas Jesuit (TX) 10-8, Coppell (TX) 9-8, Johnson (TX) 12-5, Houston (MS) 3-5, El Toro (CA) 3-3 and Marvin Ridge (NC) 2-2.

Teams to watch include Venice (FL) 6-0, Redondo Union (CA) 4-1, St. Xavier (KY) 1-0, Archbishop Moeller (OH) 0-0, and Deer Creek (OK) 3-1.
