Collegiate Baseball HS Poll (3-16-20)


TUCSON, Ariz. — Jesuit (Tampa, FL) remains No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball’s National High School Poll as presented by Diamond Pro® with a perfect 9-0 record.

It is the fourth poll the Tigers have been on top dating back to the Collegiate Baseball Pre-Season poll.

Recently Jesuit posted two shutout wins over Hillsborough (Tampa, FL), 5-0 and Countryside (Clearwater, FL), 12-0.

In the Hillsborough game, Josh Mallitz threw a complete game 1-hitter. He is 2-0 with an 0.53 ERA, 1 walk and 18 strikeouts. Three pitchers combined for a no-hitter against Countryside.

Other top pitchers include Camden Minacci (3-0, 0.63 ERA, 2 BB, 23 K), Dominic Castellano (2-0, 0.95 ERA, 1 BB, 12 K) and Justin Clark (2-0, 0.00 ERA, 0 BB, 10 K).

On offense, the Tigers have posted a .377 batting average. Top hitters include UT Henry Politz (.526, 2 2B, 1 HR, 13 RBI) and INF Jalen Niles (.500, 10 RBI).

No. 2 Orange Lutheran (Orange, CA) is 8-0 after defeating Mater Dei twice, 2-0 and 6-5. UT Max Rajcic is leading the team in both pitching and hitting. He is 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA, 1 SV, 32 K, 1 walk in 22.2 innings and has a .353 batting average with one home run and 4 RBI.

No. 3 American Heritage (Delray Beach, FL) has 11 straight wins this season. Most recently they defeated Calvary Christian Academy (Fort Lauderdale, FL), 2-0.

No. 4 American Heritage (Plantation, FL) has 10 consecutive wins to kick off the season. The Patriots defeated Florida schools Belen Jesuit, 13-3, Archbishop McCarthy, 9-3 and Doral, 6-2. Gio Ferraro leads the team in hitting with a .586 batting average, 4 home runs, 7 doubles and 17 RBI.

No. 5 Farragut (Knoxville, TN) just started its season with a 2-1 record. The Admirals lost to West, 2-0 and won the next two games against Heritage, 3-2 and Lenoir City, 5-1 before the season was halted.

No. 6 De La Salle (Concord, CA) is 3-1 after losing its latest game, 4-1 to Jesuit (Carmichael, CA). Earlier they beat Saint Francis (Mountain View, CA), 5-1. Leading the pitching staff is LHP Kyle Harrison (2-0, 0.78 ERA, 3 BB, 18 K, 9 IP).

No. 7 Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks, CA) has a 6-1 record after winning 2 of 3 against Crespi (Encino, CA) and two from Chaminade (West Hills, CA), 13-0 and 4-1. In the first Chaminade game, Lucas Gordon tossed a complete game shutout, allowing no walks, two singles and striking out 11.

No. 8 Hamilton (Chandler, AZ) is 8-0. The Huskies recently beat Copper Hills (West Jordan, UT), 5-2 in the Boras Classic-Arizona. The tournament was halted due to weather issues.

No. 9 Veterans Memorial (Corpus Christi, TX) is ranked No. 1 in Texas 5A baseball with a 15-0-1 record.

No. 10 Carroll (Southlake, TX) is 12-2 and ranked No. 1 in Texas 6A baseball.

No. 11 Thousand Oaks (CA) played no games last week and is 8-0 for the season.

No. 12 JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano, CA) won two games over Santa Margarita, 7-3 and 4-3 as they rolled to an 11-1 record. In the first game, Jared Glenn tossed a complete game, giving up 3 hits and 3 earned runs. Gabe D’Arcy hit a three-run homer in the game.

Juniors Gage Jump and Tristan LaMaison combined to strikeout 17 Eagles in the second game. LaMaison got the win, going 5 innings, allowing 3 hits and 2 runs while striking out 9.

No. 13 Owasso (OK) is 8-0 overall and 4-0 in district play. The Rams have a .406 team batting average and a 1.10 team ERA. Leading the team are Solo Skalnik (.391, 4 2B, 3 HR, 15 RBI), Nate Wohlgemuth (.435, 3 2B, 2 3B, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 3 SB) and Nate Ackenhausen (.375, 3 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR, 13 RBI). Both Wohlgemuth and Ackenhausen are 2-0 for the Rams.

No. 14 DeSoto Central (Southaven, MS) is 12-1 with wins over Houston (TN), 8-7 and Marion (AR), 10-0. The pitching staff has a 1.83 team ERA led by Cade Smith (2-0, 0.39 ERA, 30 K 5 BB, 17.2 IP) and Gavin Brassfield (2-0, 1 SV, 0.93 ERA, 6 BB, 19 K, 15 IP). Top hitter is Blaze Jordan with a .422 batting average and 14 runs scored.

No. 15 Reagan (San Antonio, TX) is 11-2-3 and ranked No. 2 in Texas 6A polls.

No. 16 Ayala (Chino Hills, CA) did not play any games last week due to rain and is 9-0 on the season. Top players include Jacob Badawi (.440, 2 2B, 1 HR, 8 RS), Troy McCain (.379, 4 2B, 1 3B, 11 RBI), Cole Koniarsky (.448, 3 2B) and Andres Pasillas (1 ER, 11 K, 0 BB, 18 IP).

New to the poll is No. 17 Cleburne (TX) with a 12-0-2 record which has a 7 game winning streak. The Yellowjackets had two ties early in the season. They are ranked No. 2 in the Texas 5A baseball.

No. 18 St. Mary’s (Orchard Lake, MI) has not started.

No. 19 Barbe (Lake Charles, LA) is 11-3 and went 3-1 for the week, losing a 2-1 game against Evangel in 8 innings. Top players include Brody Drost (3-0, 27 K, .394 BA, 2 HR, 10 RBI), Adam Guth (3-0, 29 K), Davis Meche (.345, 2 HR, 10 RBI), Bailey Juneau (.410, 8 RBI) and Ethan Medlin (.500, 1 HR, 9 RBI).

No. 20 Lake Travis (Austin, TX) is 14-2-1 and 3-0 in district play.

No. 21 St. Augustine Prep (Richland, NJ) has not started.

No. 22 Spruce Creek (Port Orange, FL) posted a 10-1 record and lost their first game of the season to Creekside (St. Johns, FL) 5-2 before games were halted.

No. 23 North Gwinnett (Suwanee, GA) won its last 5 games with four shutouts and posted a 10-3 record.

No. 24 Harvard-Westlake (Studio City, CA) is 8-1-1 with a 5-0 league record. They won two games against Crespi, 7-0 and 12-4 while the third game of the series was cancelled.

No. 25 Jesuit (Portland, OR) has not started.

No. 26 Parkview (Lilburn, GA) is 13-2 overall and 4-0 in region play. They defeated Meadowcreek, 18-0 and 11-0 and Grayson, 4-1.

No. 27 Har-Ber (Springdale, AR) is 5-1. The Wildcats beat Northside (Fort Smith, AR), 9-0.

No. 28 Millard West (Omaha, NE) has not started.

No. 29 St. John Vianney (St. Louis, MO) has not started.

New to the poll at No. 30 is AC Flora (Columbia, SC) which has 7 straight wins. The Falcons, which went undefeated in the International Paper Classic, recently defeated Riverside, 8-5 and Crestwood, 14-0. Three pitchers combined to throw the shutout against Crestwood while the batters totaled 11 hits and stole 11 bases in the game.

Teams that fell out of the poll include Huntington Beach (CA), 6-3 and Loganville (GA), 9-5.

Recently a number of high school baseball programs from states across the USA have been forced to stop their season because of Coronavirus concerns.

Collegiate Baseball hopes to continue with national high school poll this season. It all depends on whether enough schools are playing high school baseball or not.
