Collegiate Baseball HS Poll 3-27-18

LAKE TRAVIS (TX) H.S. NO. 1 IN CB POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Lake Travis H.S. (Austin, TX) is ranked No. 1 in the latest Collegiate Baseball National High School Poll.

The Cavaliers have rolled to a 17-0 record and are No. 1 in the Texas 6A division by several statewide rankings.

The pitching staff has a 0.92 Team ERA with 106 strikeouts and 47 walks in 17 games. The top pitcher this season is Blake Helton who is 4-0 with a 0.00 ERA, 20 strikeouts and 3 walks.

Leading the offense is Brett Baty (.444, 6 2B, 3 HR, 11 RBI, 22 BB), Carlos Contreras (.422, 4 2B, 18 RBI) and Dillon Weiss (.404, 6 2B, 15 RBI). Lake Travis has held opponents to two runs or less in 12 of 17 games and has outscored opponents 120-29 while averaging 7 runs a game.

No. 2 Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks, CA) is 11-0 and ranked No. 1 in the Los Angeles Times poll. Leading the pitching staff are RHP Carter Kissinger (4-0) and LHP Connor Skirttch (3-0). The top hitter is DH Lucas Gordon who hit .433 in the first 11 games. Six of the nine starters are batting well over .300. The Knights will be headed for the Boras Classic Invitational on April 3.

No. 3 Calvary Christian (Clearwater, FL) posted a 14-0 record which increases its streak to 44 straight wins dating back to last season’s undefeated 30-0 record. Of the last nine games, five were shutouts while the Warriors only allowed one run each game in the other four.

No. 4 Calvary Christian Academy (Fort Lauderdale, FL) is 13-1. They defeated previous No. 1 ranked American Heritage (Plantation, FL), 5-1.

American Heritage dropped to No. 5, but is 12-1 to start the season.

No. 6 Pleasure Ridge Park (Louisville, KY) has not started, but is ranked No. 1 in Kentucky for the pre-season.

No. 7 Valley Christian (San Jose, CA) is 10-0-1 to start.

No. 8 Sam Houston (Lake Charles, LA) has a 21-1 record. Their only loss was to Acadiana (Lafayette, LA), 9-8. The pitching staff has recorded 5 shutouts.

No. 9 Blessed Trinity (Roswell, GA) has rolled to a 17-1 record and a 10-game win streak. In a 9-7 win over River Ridge, Jake Smith hit a double, home run and collected 4 RBI. He is batting .365 for the season.

No. 10 Cathedral Catholic (San Diego, CA) is preparing for the Lions Tournament followed by the Boras Classic. They are 4-1, and pitchers have only given up 3 earned runs in 5 games.

Cleburne, TX is No. 11 with a 17-1-2 record. The Yellow Jackets have won their last 14 games, and 7 of those games were shutouts. They are ranked No. 1 in Texas 5A division.

No. 12 Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, NV) is 7-0 as they head into competition in the Lions Tournament in San Diego. The Gaels’ pitching staff has posted an 0.36 Team ERA. Leading the staff is Dutch Landis who is 3-0 with a 0.64 ERA and 17 strikeouts. The hitters have a .482 team batting average. SS Tyler Curtis is hitting .611 with 2 doubles, 5 triples and 8 RBI.

No. 13 Riverdale Baptist (Upper Marlboro, MD) has a 9-1 record. Corey Rosier has belted 5 home runs through 10 games while Ben Blackwell is 2-0 with 25 strikeouts and 4 walks. Coach Ryan Terrill won his 100th game as head coach in a 12-4 win over Annapolis Area Christian.

No. 14 Huntington Beach, CA ranked No. 2 in the Los Angeles area with a 12-2 record.

No. 15 Providence School (Jacksonville, FL) is 14-1 and the top team in Florida’s 4A division. Their only loss has been to No. 9 Blessed Trinity (Roswell, GA) in the Perfect Game Showdown tournament.

No. 16 Mira Costa (Manhattan Beach, CA) is 10-0 and ranked No. 3 in the Los Angeles area. They have outscored opponents, 55-11 and have four shutouts.

No. 17 Providence (Charlotte, NC) posted a 8-1 record. The pitching staff continues to dominate the competition. Will Palinkas struck out 14 in a 2-0 win over Weddington. Timmy Townsend struck out 10 in a 1-0 victory over Olympic while Connor McGinty tossed a no-hitter in a 15-0 win over Berry.

No. 18 St. John Vianney (Kirkwood, MO) started its season with a 5-0 record. Vianney pitchers have given up just 2 runs. At one point, they had a 26 inning stretch without giving up a run.

No. 19 Harvard-Westlake (Studio, City, CA) is 8-2 as they prepare to play in the Boras Classic in California. The Wolverines recently swept Alemany (Mission Hills, CA) in a three-game series, 6-2, 9-0 and 5-2.

No. 20 Southlake Carroll, TX is 16-3 and No. 2 in the 6A division of the Texas H.S. Baseball Coaches Association poll.

No. 21 Elk Grove, CA is 2-0 with two games suspended due to inclement weather. The games will be made up later.

No. 22 Boston College H.S. (Boston, MA) has not yet started.

No. 23 Basic (Henderson, NV) is 7-1. The Wolves beat Coronado (Henderson, NV), 18-4 for the Boras Classic-Arizona title. In the 17-hit attack, Garrett Giles was 2-for-3 with two runs and 4 RBI while Jesse Fonteboa went 3-for-5 with a double, two runs and 3 RBI and John Howard Bobo was 3-for-5 with two doubles, four runs and an RBI.

No. 24 La Cueva (Albuquerque, NM) has an 11-game win streak while posting an 11-2 record. The Bears recently won the Albquerque Metro Tournament, defeating Eldorado (NM), 10-0.

No. 25 Kokomo, IN has not started.

No. 26 Gulfport, MS is 15-2.The Admirals’ pitching staff has a 3.32 team ERA. Two hitters who have been hot are Gabe Lacy and Black Johnson who have 5 home runs each.

No. 27 Malvern Prep, PA has been unable to start its season due to weather.

No. 28 El Toro (Lake Forest, CA) started the season strong, but has slipped to a 9-3-1 record. They are 1-1 in league play.

 No. 29 Jackson (Massillon, OH) has not started yet.

No. 30 Cypress Ranch (Cypress, TX) is 15-3-2. The team is hitting .319 while the pitching staff has a 1.89 Team ERA. Ty Madden leads the pitchers with a 4-1 record, 0.52 ERA, 35 strikeouts in 26 2/3 innings.

Teams that fell out of the poll who were ranked previously include Oak Mountain, AL (16-5), Farragut, TN (6-4), Owasso, OK (10-3), Mesa Mountain View, AZ (12-4), Mater Dei, CA (1-4), Parkview, GA (14-4) and The Bolles School, FL (11-3).

Teams to watch include Round Rock, TX (15-2), McAllen, TX (17-1-1), Hattiesburg, MS (11-3, won 7 of last 8 games), Montverde Academy, FL (16-0) and Zachary, LA (21-1).
