Collegiate Baseball HS Poll 4-24-18


TUCSON, Ariz. — Calvary Christian H.S. (Clearwater, FL) has taken over the No. 1 spot in Collegiate Baseball’s National High School Poll presented by Diamond Pro®.

The Warriors (23-0) have a 53-game win streak that dates back to last season. The national record for the longest win streak was set in 2012 by Portsmouth H.S., N.H. from 2008-2012 with 89.

Calvary recently defeated Venice, FL, 1-0. Venice has won several state titles over the years. LHP Nolan Hudi tossed a one-hitter in that game. Hudi has not lost a game in the past two seasons, going 18-0 so far. This season he is 8-0 with a 0.14 ERA, 1 earned run and 69 strikeouts.

No. 2 Lake Travis (Austin, TX) dropped its first game in a 4-3 loss to Vista Ridge (TX) to end a 25-game win streak. They are 27-1.

Leading the Cavaliers is Brett Baty who is hitting .464 with 7 doubles, 9 home runs and 21 RBI. On the hill, he is 3-0 with a 1.28 ERA, 31 strikeouts in 27.1 innings. The pitching staff has a 0.98 team ERA led by Blake Helton (8-0, 0.44 ERA, 34 K, 9 BB, 47 IP).

No. 3 Argyle, TX continues to roll with a 25-0 record. The Eagles have posted 15 shutouts and are currently the No. 1 team in the Texas 4A division.

No. 4 Riverdale Baptist (Upper Marlboro, MD) has won 18 game in a row with a 23-1 overall record. For 33 consecutive years, the team has won 20 or more games per season. The most notable wins recently have been over Mercersburg Academy (PA) 8-4, Gilman (MD) 19-6 and Lake Braddock (VA) 13-8.

No. 5 Cleburne, TX has a 28-1-1 record and is undefeated at 12-0 in district play. They recently defeated Seguin (TX) 12-0, Burleson (TX) 13-1 and Ft. Worth Southwest (TX) 10-0.

No. 6 St. John Vianney (St. Louis, MO) posted a 22-1 record. The Griffins experienced their first setback of the season, losing 7-5 against Parkway Central (MO). Luke Mann continues to lead the team on the mound and at the plate. He was awarded the Rising Star Award, given annually by the St. Louis Amateur Baseball Hall of fame to the most outstanding baseball player in the St. Louis Metro Area.

No. 7 Pleasure Ridge Park (Louisville, KY) is 11-1 and is the No. 1 ranked team in Kentucky by the state’s baseball coaches association. PRB has had 22 consecutive wins over in-state competition dating back to a regular-season loss last year to St. Xavier.

No. 8 Valley Christian (San Jose, CA) posted a 20-2-1 record. Over a two week period, they posted a 3-1 record with a 3-0 loss to Serra (CA) but wins over Riordan 7-0, Bellarmine 5-2 and Archbishop Mitty 6-3 in 8 innings.

No. 9 Blessed Trinity (Roswell, GA) completed its regular season with a 28-2 overall record and 12-0 regional mark. They will face Stephens County (GA) in the first round of the Georgia 4A state playoffs. The top player for Blessed Trinity is INF CJ Abrams who was hitting .449 with 17 RBI and a team-high 32 stolen bases.

No. 10 Huntington Beach, CA has a 21-3 record and is ranked No. 1 by Cal Hi Sports. John Hahn leads the offense with a .403 batting average, RBI (18) and runs scored (21). LHP Dylan Ramirez is 6-0 with a 1.78 ERA.

No. 11 McAllen, TX posted a 24-1-1 overall record and 11-0 district record. In the last 9 games, 5 have been shutouts.

No. 12 Seton Catholic (Chandler, AZ) has a 23-1 record. The Sentinels are 8-0 in section play as they wrap up the regular season.

New to the poll at No. 13 is Zachary, LA which has a 31-2 record with the regular season almost completed. They have a 10-0 district record.

No. 14 Mira Costa (Manhattan Beach, CA) is 20-2. The last three games have been victories over Palos Verdes, CA 13-1 and 3-0 and Santa Monica, CA 4-0.

No. 15 La Cueva (Albuquerque, NM) extended its win streak to 20 games and is 20-2 overall. Junior RHP/1B Ben Schoneman has led the team. In a doubleheader against Sandia (NM), he was 7-for-9 with four doubles, 4 RBI and 3 runs scored. He had a no decision on the mound that day. For the season, he has a 5-1 record.

No. 16 Puyallup, WA posted a 17-1 record. A 16-game win streak was snapped with a 3-2 loss to South Kitsap (Port Orchard, WA), but came back with a 4-2 win over Graham-Kapowsin (WA) the next day.

No. 17 Neuqua Valley (Naperville, IL) is 14-0. In the last 7 games, no opponent has scored more than 2 runs. Over games, Neuqua has outscored opponents, 134-24.

No. 18 Desert Oasis (Las Vegas, NV) has a 23-3 record and is ranked No. 1 by the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Most recently the Diamondbacks defeated Bishop Gorman in their Desert Classic Tournament, 15-7.

No. 19 Niceville, FL enters the poll with a 20-2 record. They are the top team in Florida’s 7A division. They are led by junior Rece Hinds, who was hitting .523 with 7 doubles, 4 triples, 9 home runs and 43 RBI.

New to the poll at No. 20 is Arcadia, CA with an 18-0 record. The Apaches have been quietly dominating opponents in the Los Angeles area and are ranked No. 2 for the city by the Los Angeles Times. They have outscored opponents, 132-33 and are 8-0 in the Pacific League. The team is strong on defense and has two pitchers who have superb command in Caden Ross (6-0, 0.62 ERA, 3 BB, 34 IP) and sophomore Chris Wilson (6-0, 0.68 ERA, 5 BB in 31 IP).

No. 21 American Heritage (Plantation, FL) is 21-3 as they head into the final days of the regular season.

No. 22 Providence (Charlotte, NC) posted an 18-2 record. Senior Timmy Townsend threw a complete-game shutout over Olympic,11-0 and pitched 7 innings of a 12-inning game against Alexander Central. Providence won 4-3, and Townsend allowed no earned runs.

No. 23 Boston College H.S. (Boston, MA) continues to dodge snow, ice and rain. They are 3-1 to start the season. Against St. John’s Prep, RHP Mike Vasil had a perfect game going for 6 2/3 innings before yielding one hit. In the 1-0 win, he struck out 13 and walked none.

No. 24 Bishop England (Charleston, SC) has a 23-1 record. They started the season with 16 straight wins before having a 3-0 setback against Hanahan (SC). The regular season is close to wrapping up before state playoffs begin.

Bellarmine College Prep (San Jose, CA) dropped to No. 25 after losing a couple of games to Valley Christian, 5-2 and Serra (San Mateo), 5-2. They are 18-4.

No. 26 Harvard-Westlake (Studio City, CA) won three games over Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks, CA) in posting a 17-3 record and 9-0 mark in their league.

No. 27 Staley (Kansas City, MO) is No. 2 in the Missouri 5A rankings with a 19-1 record. Staley has a 17-game win streak.

No. 28 Seton Hall Prep (West Orange, NJ) is 9-1. Their only loss is a 6-4 setback against Columbia (Maplewood, NJ). The Pirates have outscored opponents 74-20.

No. 29 Providence School (Jacksonville, FL) has a 20-3 record. Over the last 7 games, they have posted four shutouts.

No. 30 Parkview (Lilburn, GA) completed its regular season with a 25-5 record and begins post-season play.

Teams that fell out of the top 30 include Sam Houston (Lake Charles, LA), Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, NV), Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks, CA), Calvary Christian Academy (Ft. Lauderdale, FL), Delbarton (Morristown, NJ), Kokomo, IN, Jackson (Massillon, OH) and Malvern Prep (PA).
