Collegiate Baseball HS Poll (4-9-19)


TUCSON, Ariz. — Lake Travis (Austin, TX) remains No. 1 in the latest Collegiate Baseball National High School Poll presented by Diamond Pro with a 22-1 record.

Despite a recent 9-5 loss to Akins (Austin, TX), Lake Travis kept the top spot due to a number of other quality teams posting losses the past two weeks.

The Cavaliers are hitting .346 led by 3B Brett Baty (.630, 10 HR, 29 RBI) and RF/1B Austin Plante (.452, 8 2B, 4 3B, 4 HR, 28 RBI).

The pitching staff has posted a 1.47 team ERA led by Jimmy Lewis (5-0, 0.68 ERA, 44 K, 9 BB, 30.2 IP).

No. 2 Argyle (TX) has a 21-1-1 record with recent wins over Decatur (TX) 2-1, Bridgeport (TX) 14-0 and Springtown (TX) 19-2. In the Springtown game, Argyle batters banged out 21 hits to score 19 runs. Brenden Dixon belted a three-run homer.

No. 3 Colleyville Heritage (Colleyville, TX) is 22-1. Over the last 6 games, the Panthers have outscored opponents, 58-4. Top hitters include SS/RHP Bobby Witt Jr. (.577, 10 2B, 4 3B, 11 HR, 37 RBI) and C Nick Balsano (.514, 6 2B, 3 HR, 22 RBI). Leading the pitching staff is RHP Austin Glaze (5-0, 0.62 ERA, 52 K, 34 IP).

No. 4 New Hanover (Wilmington, NC) is 11-0. The Wildcats have not allowed an opponent to score more than 3 runs in any game and have posted 4 shutouts. The team is hitting .311 and the pitching staff has a 0.91 ERA, led by LHP Blake Walston (6-0, 0.44 ERA, 71 K, 7 BB, 31.2 IP).

Barbe (Lake Charles, LA) moves to No. 5 in the poll after posting a 27-2 record that includes a 17-game winning streak. Three pitchers have 5 wins each in Jack Walker (5-1, 0.98 ERA, 57 K), Adam Guth (5-0, 0.58 ERA, 44K) and Dylan Beier (5-0, 2.18 ERA, 27 K).

Five Buccaneers batters are hitting over .360 with LSU commit Brody Drost posting 9 doubles and 5 home runs to go with his .372 batting average.

No. 6 St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, FL) is 14-1 with a 14-game win streak. They are the No. 1 team in Florida’s 8A division.

No. 7 Malvern Prep (Malvern, PA) is 14-0. The Friars won all 10 games they played on a spring trip to Florida against various other cold-weather teams. Leading the hitters is Connor Offshack (.531, 6 extra base hits, 13 RBI, 14 RS) and Chris Newell (.400, 2 HR, 15 SB).

Malvern Prep has a 29-game win streak dating back to the 2018 season.

No. 8 DeSoto Central (Southaven, MS) has a 21-2 record. In the last 10 games, the pitching staff has recorded 5 shutouts. Top pitchers include Cade Smith (4-1, 0.78 ERA, 49 K, 27 IP, not allowed an ER in last 15 innings) and Colby Crocker (5-1, 1.24 ERA, 21 K).

Kamren James has a .471 batting average, 6 home runs, 4 doubles and 22 RBI and at one point in the season had an 11-game hit streak going.

No. 9 Orange Lutheran (Orange, CA) posted a 17-3 record and recently won its third consecutive USA Baseball National High School Invitational championship after defeating Harvard-Westlake (Studio City, CA), 6-2. The Lancers have moved to the top of several polls in California.

No. 10 Cypress (CA) is 19-3 and went 2-2 in the Boras Classic South Division recently with wins over Huntington Beach and Mater Dei. This year they have split two games with Orange Lutheran.

RHP Cameron Repetti threw a no-hitter against Tustin for a 1-0 victory. He is 5-2 with a 0.75 ERA, 48 strikeouts in 46.2 innings. The pitching staff has posted a 1.55 team ERA.

No. 11 Cypress Ranch (Cypress, TX) has a 21-2-1 record. They are 10-0 in district play and have several early season wins over tough Texas competition. The team has posted a .314 batting average with 13 home runs while the pitching staff has a 1.10 team ERA and 220 strikeouts. JJ Goss threw a no-hitter in a 6-1 victory over Cy Springs followed by a perfect game over Cy Park.  He is 7-0 with a 0.33 ERA, 11 walks and 79 strikeouts.

No. 12 Georgetown (TX) is 23-2-1 with a 9-game win streak and 7 shutout games. Grant Wood has not given up a run in 23 innings and only surrendered one all season. He is 6-0 with 26 K, 17 hits and 9 walks. Jack Brinley has only given up 4 runs all season and none in the last 15 innings. He is 6-0 with 25 strikeouts and 13 walks. Georgetown has scored 203 runs with 131 stolen bases in 25 games. They will play Lake Travis on April 13.

Moving into the poll at No. 13 is Benedictine (Richmond, VA) which started the season 14-0. They are the No. 1 team in the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association 1 standings and have posted 6 shutouts.

No. 14 Jesuit (Tampa, FL) is 13-2 and recently had a quality win over Parkview (Lilburn, GA), 2-1.

No. 15 Saint Xavier (Louisville, KY) has an 11-2 record. Leading the offense is 1B Ryan Nicholson (.500, 4 2B, 3 3B, 14 RBI) and OF Brandon Tucker (.452 BA). Top pitcher is LHP Brycen Harkins (3-0, 0.45 ERA).

No. 16 Calvary Christian (Clearwater, FL) saw a 7-game winning streak snapped with a 5-3 loss to Barron Collier (FL). They are 11-2.

No. 17 American Heritage (Plantation, FL) is 13-2. They recently lost to Westminster Christian (Miami, FL), 3-2 in a 10 inning game.

No. 18 Harvard-Westlake (Studio City, CA) is 15-3-1 and were the runners-up in the USA Baseball National High School Invitational.

No. 19 St. Laurence (Burbank, IL) started its season 11-0. Gatorade Player of the Year and All American Matt McCormick is hitting .578 with 6 home runs and 20 RBI.

No. 20 Mountain Vista (Highlands Ranch, CO) posted an 11-2 record and has a 7-game win streak. Their only losses were against teams at the Boras Classic-Arizona tournament. In Colorado, Mountain Vista is No. 1 in 5A.

No. 21 Bryant (AR) is 19-2 and on an 11-game winning streak.

No. 22 Mason (OH) is off to a 9-1 start. The Comets only blemish has been against Riverdale (TN), 7-5.

No. 23 Owasso (OK) posted an 18-4 overall record and is 6-0 in district play. The Rams have three recent wins — two over Shawnee (OK), 12-2 and 8-7 in 8 innings and Jenks (OK), 9-6. Zach McCombs leads the pitching staff with a 4-0 record, 2 Saves and 30 strikeouts along with Hayden Tallman (3-0, 36 K) and David Sandlin (3-0, 0.72 ERA, 35 K). On offense, Cam Thompson leads the team with 7 home runs and 24 RBI. Connor Beichler has recorded 15 stolen bases.

No. 24 Parkview (Lilburn, GA) is 20-4. The Panthers had two recent losses against Florida schools, Venice 6-4 and Tampa Jesuit, 2-1, but beat Sarasota, 3-2.  They remain the No. 1 in Georgia’s 7A division.

No. 25 Valley Christian (San Jose, CA) is 14-4.

Moving into the poll at No. 26 is Rio Rancho (NM) with a 16-2 record. They recently defeated previously ranked La Cueva (Albuquerque, NM), 7-1.

No. 27 Desert Oasis (Las Vegas, NV) is the No. 1 4A team by Nevada Preps with a 13-2 record. They went 1-2 in the NHSI tournament, recording a win over Delbarton School (NJ), 4-3 in 9 innings.

No. 28. Mesquite (Gilbert, AZ) enters the poll with a 20-4 record and an 11 game win streak. The Wildcats had a few stumbles in the early season, but have come on strong recently. In a 21-10 win over Seton Catholic (AZ), Jayden Orozco went 3-for-4 with 2 home runs and 7 RBI.

No. 29 Har-Ber (Springdale, AR)  is 14-3. Leading the offense is SS Hunter Wood (.442, 17 RBI, 7 2B, 13 SB). Top pitchers include RHP Blake Adams (5-0, 1.40 ERA, 51 K, 12 BB, 30 IP) and RHP/3B Charlie Acuff (2-1, 3 SV, 0.97 ERA, 28 K, 21.2 IP).

No. 30 Providence (Charlotte, NC) has a 16-1 record and is 8-0 in conference play. The Panthers will face a big challenge with two games against Ardrey Kell (NC).

Teams that fell out of the top 30 include Huntington Beach (CA), George County (Lucedale, MS), Hamilton (Chandler, AZ), Massillon Jackson (OH), Sam Houston (Lake Charles, LA), La Cueva (Albuquerque, NM), Delbarton School (NJ), Palo Verde (NV) and Blessed Trinity (Roswell, GA).

Teams to watch include Walsh Jesuit (OH) 7-0 and West Ranch (Valencia, CA) 18-4, National Classic champions.
