Louisville Slugger Freshmen A-A Team

PrintTUCSON, Ariz. — The 2015 Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-American team, selected by Collegiate Baseball newspaper, features a wealth of baseball talent.

The team is headed by Collegiate Baseball’s Freshman Pitcher of The Year RHP Alex Lange of LSU and Freshmen Players of The Year Brendan McKay of Louisville and JJ Schwarz of Florida.

Lange was 11-0 with a 1.76 ERA and 110 strikeouts in 97 innings.

Louisville’s McKay had a remarkable season as a multiple position athlete as he hit .315 with 14 doubles, 3 homers and 32 RBI. As a pitcher, he was 8-3 with 4 saves, 1.71 ERA and 108 strikeouts over 89 2/3 innings.

Florida’s Schwarz hit .320 with 16 doubles, 15 homers, 3 triples and 66 RBI.

Here is a rundown on the 2015 Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-Americans.

Starting Pitchers

LHP Seth Romero, Houston: The Rookie of The Year in the American Athletic and a second team pick, Romero was 7-4 with 7 saves and a 1.90 ERA. He struck out 92 batters with 22 walks over 83 1/3 innings.

LHP Gunner Leger, Louisiana-Lafayette: A second team Sun Belt pick and Freshman of The Year in the League, Leger was 6-4 with a 2.87 ERA, 83 strikeouts and 19 walks over 106 2/3 innings.

LHP John Gavin, Cal. St. Fullerton: An Honorable Mention Big West pick, Gavin was 7-2 with a 3.55 ERA and 65 strikeouts with 24 walks.

LHP Tyler Wilson, Rhode Island: The Pitcher of The Year in the Atlantic-10 Conference as well as Rookie of The Year and a first team selection, Wilson was 6-3 with a 2.16 ERA. He struck out 75 with 27 walks over 87 1/3 innings.

LHP Matt Ladrech, California: Ladrech was 7-4 with a 2.67 ERA this season for the Bears.

LHP Tarik Skubal, Seattle: A second team Western Athletic Conference choice, Skubal was 7-4 with a 3.24 ERA and 68 strikeouts over 83 1/3 innings.

Alex Lange mug LSU Frosh Pitch of YrRHP Alex Lange, LSU: A first team SEC selection and Freshman of The Year in the league, Lange was 11-0 with a 1.76 ERA, 110 strikeouts and 43 walks in 97 IP. 

RHP Michael Baumann, Jacksonville: Baumann picked up Pitcher of The Year in the Atlantic Sun, Freshman of The Year and first team league honors during a superb season. He was 7-1 with a 2.24 ERA, 85 strikeouts, 28 walks in 84 1/3 innings.

RHP Keaton McKinney, Arkansas: A member of the All-SEC Freshmen Team, McKinney started 16 games and posted a 6-1 record, 3.21 ERA and fired 2 complete games with 43 strikeouts over 81 1/3 innings.

RHP Noah Bremer, Washington: An Honorable Mention All-Pac-12 selection, Bremer was 6-3 with a 2.41 ERA over 15 starts. He struck out 36 batters with 16 walks over 78 1/3 innings.

RHP Jeffrey Passantino, Lipscomb: A second team Atlantic Sun selection, Passantino was 5-1 with a 2.69 ERA, 69 strikeouts and 14 walks over 67 innings.

RHP Matt Chanin, Maryland-Baltimore County: A first team America East selection and Rookie of The Year in the league, Chanin was 5-2 with a 1.96 ERA and 39 strikeouts in 64 1/3 innings.  

RHP Ryan Nutof, Michigan: An All-Freshman pick in the Big Ten, Nutof posted a 5-3 record, 3.71 ERA and struck out 63 batters with 32 walks over 80 innings in 14 starts.

RHP Rollie Lacy, Creighton: A first team Big East pick, Lacy was 6-1 with a 1.66 ERA, 47 strikeouts in 74 1/3 innings.  

RHP Brooks Wilson, Stetson: A second team Atlantic Sun pick and member of the All-Freshmen Team in the league, Wilson was 9-5 with a 4.39 ERA and 59 strikeouts over 84 innings.

RHP Griffin Canning, UCLA: Canning was 7-1 with a 2.97 ERA, 66 strikeouts, 6 walks in 63 2/3 innings.

RHP Zac Carey, Bowling Green: A second team Mid-American selection and Freshman Pitcher of The Year in the league, Carey was 7-3 with a 3.43 ERA, 25 strikeouts in 78 2/3 innings.

RHP Chris Mathewson, Long Beach St.: A first team Big West selection and the Freshman Pitcher of The Year in the league, Mathewson was 6-6 with a 1.94 ERA, 80 strikeouts and 24 walks in 93 innings.

RHP Drew Rasmussen, Oregon St.: A first team Pac-12 selection, Rasmussen was 7-4 with a 2.80 ERA, 82 strikeouts, 30 walks in 106 innings.

RHP Evan Miller, IUPU-Ft. Wayne: A second team Summit pick, Miller was 6-5 with a 4.50 ERA, 94 strikeouts, 42 walks in 80 innings.

RHP James Karinchak, Bryant: A first team Northeast Conference selection and Rookie of The Year in the league, Karinchak was 8-5 with 6 complete games, 3.24 ERA, 74 strikeouts, 26 walks in 77 2/3 innings.

RHP Mitch Hart, Southern California: Hart was 7-3 with 2 complete games, 4.07 ERA, 51 strikeouts in 86 1/3 innings.

RHP Tanner Houck, Missouri: An All-Freshman pick in the SEC, Houck was 8-5 with a 3.49 ERA, 91 strikeouts, 12 walks in 100 2/3 innings.

RHP Tyler Stevens, New Mexico: Stevens was 5-4 with 2 complete games, 3.44 ERA, 42 strikeouts in 68 innings.

RHP Shane McCarthy, Seton Hall: McCarthy was 4-4 with a team-best 2.19 ERA. He led the Pirates with 65 2/3 innings of work as he struck out 29 batters and walked 9 in 10 starts. At one point in the season, he had a streak of 23 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run.

RHP B.J. Myers, West Virginia: A member of the All-Freshmen Team in the Big 12, Myers had a 3.82 ERA with 60 strikeouts over 63 2/3 innings.

RHP Justin Courtney, Maine: A second team America East pick, Courtney was 5-6 with a 3.24 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 72 1/3 innings.

RHP Andrew Ryan, Massachusetts-Lowell: A second team America East pick, Ryan was 2-2 with 1 save, 2.67 ERA and 29 strikeouts over 57 1/3 IP. 

Relief Pitchers/Closers

Dylan Moore, Louisiana-Lafayette: Moore was a second team Sun Belt pick who posted 12 saves, a 3-3 record, 1.51 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 47 2/3 innings.

Jesse Stallings, LSU: Stallings had 12 saves, 2.23 ERA, 26 strikeouts, 11 walks in 32 1/3 innings.

Mitch Hickey, Oregon St.: Hickey was 4-1 with 11 saves, 2.28 ERA, 21 strikeouts in 27 2/3 innings.

Mac Sceroler, Southeastern Louisiana: Sceroler was 3-2 with 6 saves, 2.45 ERA, 26 strikeouts, 5 walks in 29 1/3 innings.

Sean Martens, Central Michigan: In 22 appearances, Martens posted a 6-1 record with a 3.22 ERA and 29 strikeouts.

Bobby Holmes, Coastal Carolina: A second team Big South pick and Freshman of The Year in the league, Holmes was 4-1 with 4 saves, 2.90 ERA, 55 strikeouts, 16 walks in 62 innings.

Brad Bass, Notre Dame: Bass was 3-1 with 2 saves, 1.91 ERA, 28 strikeouts, 13 walks over 33 innings.

Bryan Pall, Michigan: An All-Freshmen Big Ten pick, Pall was 2-0 with 3 saves, 2.97 ERA, 31 strikeouts in 33 1/3 innings.

Carter Love, College of Charleston: A second team Colonial pick and a member of the All-Rookie team, Love was 6-0 with 4 saves, 1.98 ERA, 33 strikeouts, 4 walks in 41 innings.

Harrisen Egly, Columbia: A second team Ivy League pick, Egly was 4-1 with 5 saves, 3.41 ERA, 17 strikeouts in 29 innings.

Matt Whatley, Oral Roberts: A first team Summit Conference selection and Newcomer of The Year in the league, Whatley hit .355 with 16 doubles, 3 triples, 5 homers, 44 RBI and 16 stolen bases.

Adan Ordonez, North Carolina A&T: Ordonez was a first team Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference pick and Rookie of The Year in the league. He hit .341 with 10 doubles and 13 RBI.

Brett Cumberland, California: Cumberland hit .254 with 10 doubles, 7 homers and 32 RBI.

Deon Stafford, Saint Joseph’s: A second team Atlantic-10 pick and a member of the All-Rookie team in the league, Stafford hit .341 with 19 doubles, 2 triples, 2 homers and 26 RBI.

Evan Skoug, Texas Christian: A member of the All-Freshmen team in the Big 12, Skoug hit .282 with 13 doubles, 7 homers, 43 RBI and 4 stolen bases.

K.J. Harrison, Oregon St.: The Freshman of The Year in the Pac-12 Conference and a first team league pick, hit .309 with 12 doubles, 3 triples, 10 homers and 60 RBI.

Luke Rasmussen, Long Beach St.: An Honorable Mention Big West Conference choice, Rasmussen hit .315 with 4 doubles, 6 homers and 17 RBI.

P.J. Harris, Alabama St.: Harris hit .308 with 6 doubles, 5 homers and 33 RBI. He also walked 33 times.

Will Toffey, Vanderbilt: An All-Freshmen selection in the Southeastern Conference, Toffey hit .309 with 19 doubles, 4 homers, 45 RBI and 7 stolen bases.

Dylan Busby, Florida St.: Busby was a member of the All-Freshmen team in the Atlantic Coast Conference. He hit .239 with 14 doubles, 9 homers, 45 RBI and 12 stolen bases.

Jesus Santana, Jackson St.: He was a first team Southwestern Athletic Conference pick and Freshman of The Year in the league with a .283 batting average, 12 doubles, 2 triples, 12 homers and 48 RBI.

Zach McKinstry, Central Michigan: A second team Mid-American selection, he hit .317 with 4 doubles, 19 RBI and 8 stolen bases.

Justin Jones, Georgia St.: Jones hit .297 with 9 doubles, 2 triples and 1 homer as he produced 28 RBI and scored 35 runs. He was first among Sun Belt freshmen in batting average, hits, runs and second in RBI. Jones started every game at shortstop and played outstanding defense, helping Georgia St. lead the Sun Belt with 57 double plays.

Randell Kanemaru, Columbia: Named Rookie of the Year in the Ivy League and an Honorable Mention selection, Kanemaru hit .296 with 6 doubles, 3 homers and 25 RBI.

Steven Cohen, Lafayette: A second team Patriot selection, Cohen hit .281 with 7 doubles, 5 homers and 23 RBI.

Zach Rutherford, Old Dominion: An All-Freshman pick in Conference USA, Rutherford hit .317 with 13 doubles, 1 triple, 18 RBI and 4 stolen bases.
