RICE UNIVERSITY NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL
TUCSON, Ariz. Rice University has been ranked No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball newspaper's latest NCAA Division I baseball poll. The Owls (20-3) have won seven straight. The No. 1 ranking marks the first time in Rice University history the Owls have been at the top of any sports poll. Florida St., ranked No. 1 for the prior three weeks, slipped to second after posting a 2-1 record last week. The Seminoles only loss was 8-1 to 16th ranked Wichita St. One of the more amazing stats for Rice this season is that 11 different players have hit home runs, even though the Owls have hit only 24 in 23 games.
POLL NOTES: Several teams have been red-hot. Florida International has won its first 20 games of the year, including a victory over highly regarded Miami, Fla. earlier this season. It is the longest winning streak in the nation. Others with noted winning streaks include North Carolina (12-0), Georgia Tech. (11 straight), North Carolina St. (11 consecutive), Auburn (10 in a row), and Mississippi St. (10 straight). Five teams fell out of the rankings, including Houston (0-4 last week), Clemson (1-3), Georgia (2-3), Arkansas (1-3) and UCLA (2-2).
The "Collegiate Baseball" Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.
