TUCSON, Ariz. Miami, Fla. has been ranked No. 1 in the final Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll of 1999. It marks the eighth time this season the Hurricanes (50-13) have been on top of the poll. Miami rolled through the College World Series with a perfect 4-0 record, including a championship game 6-5 victory over Florida St. It marked the Hurricanes' third national championship in baseball with other titles coming in 1982 and 1985.
Miami led all eight competing teams in the College World Series with a 2.25 ERA and a .312 batting average. The Hurricanes became the first team in college history to win every post-season game in the new 64-team championship. Miami won three straight in the first round of regional action. That was followed with two straight Super Regional wins and four consecutive victories at the College World Series for a total of nine straight. In all, Miami finished the year with 11 wins in a row.
The 1999 national championship was Miami Head Coach Jim Morris' first national title. He is the only coach in NCAA history to take a school to the College World Series in each of his first six years at a program. The Hurricanes under Morris have advanced to the CWS in 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998 and 1999.
The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.
