College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release: Monday (March 9, 2009) GEORGIA NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL TUCSON, Ariz. — The University of Georgia (12-0) has been ranked No. 1 for the first time this season in Collegiate Baseball newspaper's NCAA Division I baseball poll. The Bulldogs' 12-0 start is the best in school history, surpassing the 9-0 start by the 1911 team. Georgia is hitting .364 as a team with 20 homers, 36 doubles and 18 stolen bases over 12 games. The pitching staff has a 2.42 ERA with 115 strikeouts and only 32 walks. Louisiana St., ranked No. 1 the previous three polls, slipped to third after losing two of three games at home to Illinois. POLL NOTES: Several other teams have been red-hot. Virginia entered the poll for the first time this season with a perfect 12-0 record. Three other teams also made their entrance into the poll with U.C. Santa Barbara (9-2), Illinois (7-2), and San Jose St. (9-0). Coastal Carolina has won nine straight while Cal. St. Fullerton has won eight in a row. Teams that fell out of the poll include Florida St. (1-4 last week), Clemson (2-3), Mississippi St. (1-3) and San Diego (1-3). When Florida St. dropped two of three at home to Boston College last weekend, it marked the first time in school history that the Seminoles have dropped an ACC series opener, a span covering 18 seasons. The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season. (Top 30 Agate Follows)
