Collegiate Baseball H.S. Poll 3-10-13


TUCSON, Ariz. — Cathedral Catholic (San Diego, CA) is ranked No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball’s first regular season high school poll.

The Dons were ranked No. 1 in the pre-season poll last January. Cathedral Catholic rolled off two wins to open the season. LHP Stephen Gonsalves threw five shutout innings to defeat La Costa Canyon, 7-2. Andrew Wright and Gabe Simpson provided two hits and 2 RBI in the game.

LHP Brady Aiken threw five innings against Bonita Vista. He allowed two hits and had 9 strikeouts for the 7-0 win.

No. 2 The Woodlands, TX had 13 straight wins to start the season behind strong pitching. The Highlanders have only given up 19 runs while scoring 92 in 13 games. Pitchers have thrown four shutouts. RHP Carter Hope threw a no-hitter against powerhouse Klein Collins for a 7-0 victory. He pitched a complete game, striking out nine and walking one. He also got a win over Cypress Lakes, allowing no runs with four strikeouts in 6 innings.

Harvard-Westlake (Studio City, CA) is No. 3 with 6 straight wins that includes four shutouts. Pitchers have allowed opponents only three runs in the six games.

No. 4 Oak Grove (Hattiesburg, MS) has an 8-0 record. Kirk McCarty is hitting .465 in 8 games. He is 3-0 on the mound and fired a one hitter against rival Petal, striking out 11. In a game against Sumrall, he struck out 16.

No. 5 Archbishop McCarthy (Southwest Ranches, FL) also has 9 wins to open the season. The Mavericks pitchers have four shutouts. Andrew Nunez is 3-0 after throwing five no-hit innings against Fort Lauderdale.

Jesuit (Tampa, FL) moves into the No. 6 spot having started the season with 10 straight victories. Leading the team is Spencer Trayner who hit .517 with 4 doubles, 1 home run and 15 RBI. He is 3-0 on the mound with 1 save, 1.08 ERA, 25 strikeouts and 1 walk in 13 innings.

Recently he went 6 innings against IMG Academy (Bradenton, FL), giving up one run, striking out 12 and walking none.

Tomball, TX comes in at No. 7 after starting the season with 13 straight wins. The Cougars began the season winning three tournaments — North Texas Classic, Ferrell Classic and New Caney. They have outscored opponents 132 to 27.

St. Francis (Mountain View, CA) is No. 8 with 8 straight wins to start the year. The Lancers moved into the poll after defeating always tough De La Salle, 6-4 and pre-season ranked Campolindo, 6-3. Campolindo (1-2) dropped out of the poll.

No. 9 Jenks, OK is 4-0 on the season. While the scores have been high, Jenks pitchers have been unmerciful. Bryce Ward and Colin Hays combined to no-hit U.S. Grant, striking out 12 in the 5 inning game that ended 21-0. Thomas Hatch allowed only four hits and struck out 12 against Westmoore, and Bryce Ward struck out 10 in a 14-1 win over Enid. Coming up will be the team’s first big test in a face-off against No. 11 Owasso, OK. Owasso has a 6-0 record to start of the season.

No. 13 Venice, FL remains a strong contender, having started the season 7-1. The Indians suffered an early loss to Seminole, but their last five games have all been shutouts. Venice pitchers have posted 6 shutouts in 7 wins.

No. 14 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, CA) split two games against St. Mary’s (Stockton, CA) to start the season.

No. 15 Cherry Creek (Green-wood Village, CO) was snowed out of its first game.

Hamilton (Chander, AZ) is No. 16 with a 6-1 record. The Huskies suffered a loss in its first game of the year to Mesa Mountain View, but has followed with 6 wins. Junior Kent Hasler is 3-0 to start the season while Cody Bellinger has a win and a save. Tyler Hill is leading the offense with 10 hits.

Lexington, SC dropped to No. 18 after going 3-1 in the International Paper Classic. They lost to Conway, 4-1, who lost in the tournament’s final game against A.C. Flora.

No. 19 Loganville, GA is 5-1, suffering a 10-3 loss against Johns Creek, GA. The Red Devils will face nationally ranked Grayson this week.

Calallen (Corpus Christi, TX) moves into the poll at No. 22 with a 16-1 record. The Wildcats won two early season tournaments. In their own tournament, they defeated Alice, 12-1 in the final game.

Grayson (Loganville, GA) dropped to No. 24 after going 5-2 to start the season. The Rams competed in the LaGrange Toyota Invitational beating Cullman, AL and Callaway, but ended up dropping games against Eagle View Academy (Jacksonville, FL) and losing the championship game to Crisp County (Cordele, GA).

Archbishop Moeller (Cincinnati, OH) moves in at No. 26. Their season begins on March 23.

No. 27 Barbe (Lake Charles, LA) started its season with a 12-2 record, winning a close 12-11 game against Catholic and shutting down East Ascension, 10-0.

No. 28 Riverdale Baptist (West Marlboro, MD) started 2-0. The team is known for its great base running and already has 6 stolen bases led by Matt McPhearson with 2. Chase Brewis and Taylor Bloom each have one win. Brewis struck out 9 against Maret, and Bloom had 8 Ks against Gonzaga.

No. 29 Woodford County (Versailles, KY) starts on March 12.

Milton, GA slipped to No. 30 with a 4-2 record. The Eagles did post two shutouts against North Cobb, 10-0 and Harrison, 4-0. They face Johns Creek, GA this week.

Several teams fell out of the top 30, including TC Roberson, NC (1-3), Campolindo, CA (1-2), Lakewood, CA (2-2), El Toro, CA (2-4), Dulles, TX (8-3) and Snow Canyon, UT (2-2).
