Game 1 of the College World Series Championship Finals featured a 9-8 win by Vanderbilt over Virginia. The Commodores scored all 9 runs in the third inning behind 5 walks, three hits (including two doubles by Tyler Campbell), a hit by pitch and an error. After the top half of the third inning, Vanderbilt led 9-2. But Virginia ultimately made a game of it by scoring three more in the bottom of the third, two times in the fifth and another run in the eighth. The tying run was on third base in the eighth inning, but the Cavaliers couldn’t muster one final hit to tie it up. In one of the strangest line scores ever at a College World Series game, Vanderbilt tallied 9 runs, 6 hits and no errors while Virginia scored 8 runs on 15 hits and committed one error.
